2nd gen 4runner speakers

Well I've gone through plenty of posts, and it seems everyone who says they got a 6.5 into that rear OEM enclosure seems to forget pics

I'm about to pull the box and get some measurements before I head off to the store to see what's the largest I can in that thing. Does anyone have prove positive pictures of their rear speakers? I want it BEHIND the interior plastics.

I did but don't have any pics. Simply put, I pulled out the enclosed speakers that were there. Be careful if you have the ones that are amplified, since cutting the power with side cutters could be a bad idea.

With a piece of cardboard, I made a template and transferred that to a piece of 3/4" MDF and made backing plates for my new speakers. I cut out the hole for the speakers in the backing plates, screwed them to the flange that you have near where the old ones mounted up and oingo boingo, new rear speakers.

So did you keep the factory enclosures or just go free air?

I'm am big on enclosures, Crutchfield used to make these poly foam baskets that worked great for odd spaces.

I did the rears tonight, 6.5". Removed the OEM "pods" angle grinder with a grind and sanding disk to make the surface flush and resized the hole. Then surface mounted the new speakers. Nothing too special but I took a ton of pics and I'll get them up for you guys tomorrow.

The most important thing when you're resizing the hole is to stay away from the factory port without moving towards the front of the car too much (the speaker surround gets close to the sheet metal (as someone noticed in another thread).

P.S. cheap speakers but holy CRAP the 4runner sounds great after getting rid of those 19yr old speakers.

I went free air, though I suppose I could build a small enclosure behind them, it wouldn't serve much of a point. It's not like I'm trying to run a sub there or anything. They're just for rear fill.

yeah you are going to have to cut it open more, when i got mine, it already had aftermarket 5.25" inch infinty kappa speakers but they sucked so i swapped them out for some 6.5" TMA's. all i did was take a file and trim and make the opening bigger

oh and for the drivers side, you might have to trim that metal part of the body in the picture cuz it is very very close to the speaker cone and doesnt leave a lot of room for flex, i havent trimmed it yet but really need to. the passenger side theres no metal that comes close to the box, but everything is a tight fit with the 6.5's, it works, you just have to make it fit somehow.

hi pal!
here are the pics you want ,i did mine today with 6.5 speakers ,keep and eye on the metal panel i fits but is to close to the speaker surround so take a plier and pull back a little the metal so it wont rub your speakers,you need to use some sealant like hot glue or silicone to make the speaker holes more air tight.you will be satisfied with the sound it will be more clear and the bass will be more clear too.

The main thing on small speakers is to keep the front and back wave from joining. So as long as the speaker is mounted in the side panel you should be fine. I doubt mounting it in the box will provide any benefit. Besides the boxes the factory designed are for low throw speakers that are tuned for low frequencies. The tweeters above the rear window provide the hi-s in the rear.

Not saying it shouldn't be done, just not all that important.

I removed my factory rear boxes and mounted my new 5" component speakers in my new side cabinets. I installed the tweeters where the factory tweeters were mounted. The one side cabinet holds my sub the other my air pump and 2nd battery. The boxes will get trimmed to cover and hide it all. The interior side panels will be cut to the boxes and then re-intalled.

The black carpet will be grey. Just had some black laying around.

My only observation about James' creation is that it eats up a ton of rear real estate. That's all I'm saying.

You know, i dont think it does that too horribly, as it seems to be built around the wheel wells so that its more square is all. then again, having my rear's real estate more square would be a + to me so... haha

They are tapered to match the wheel wells. It doesn't look like it, but tapers 3" at the rear. They are full of items. Subs, amps on both sides, battery, air pumps and power inverter. All of it stays hidden and protected.

I got some 6.5" pioneers from my brother in law (new in packaging!!!

)
so I took the old boxes out... dremeled the whole larger... insert pioneers... replace box... no rubbing, fit and sounds great!

and myself fighting the carpet and siding back together...

I like it!

but what about the front you guys?!?!?!?!..the rear is rather simple in my opinion..but the front is a little more complicated..i want to put 6.5's in the door..guess i'll have to cut the panel

anybody got any pics of their front speakers!?!

Crap I forgot to put these up! I was going to fiberglass the front of the enclosure to seal all the holes but then realized the Michigan game was on so it got cut short. I used Pioneer TS-G's they fit perfectly, nice low surround. The fronts were just upgraded to new 4", I'll have to do something in the door, that space is impractically small.

I did loose the mounting bracket for the electrical connector on top, no big deal just made a new one out of gaffing tape. When you're enlarging the hole go AWAY from the factory port.
