22r HO Alternator Swap
Ok so I am planning my alternator upgrade and have learned a ton from yotatech and pirate4x4. Thanks Everyone!
To start, I have a 1986 22r truck. I have yet to see all the answers I need so maybe I can try to be as complete as i can.
There are several paths to take. Many folks are swapping in a GM style alternator (10si, 12si, CS130, or CS144) with an appropriate bracket adapter:

I assume these brackets all work for these different alternators on the 22r/e.
Many of these GM alternators are everywhere so that's a plus for junk yards ($$ savings) and emergency NAPA runs (even these are under $100). And they are a definite improvement over the terrible stock Toyota alternators in amperage (up to 105 amps vs 40-60 amps). Not too shabby.
But I really wanted something more in the 130-160 amp range. I figure if I'm going to do it, I might as well make it HD! Right now I only have 2 Hella lights on the front, and 4 more ready for install, but eventually I want a winch, and who doesn't love a ton of cool accessories?

(I still am unsure exactly which one will work for my 22r from either of these sites, and will it work with the bracket adapter? Obviously it has to have the V belt pulley. Help!)

Then there's the wiring adaptation needed. Custom Wire? Piggyback a GM compatible plug into the harness (keeping the OEM plug as backup)? Custom voltage regulator/ plug adapters? Buy one of these?.....

So between $180 for the unit and another $50 for the bracket and $25 for an adapter. Why not just get a bolt on deal like these?

No bracket needed, no wiring adapter needed, same belt. Is there a bad side of these? I've read about a "sealed" vs open alternator body issues. Will mud and water really kill the alternator?
In conclusion....
If you want 100 amps, the gm stock alternators and a bracket adapter and wiring harness seems like the most cost effective way to go. Seems to me the cs130 is the right choice? Will the cs144 be better? Is 100 amps adequate for winch and lights and performance? Will the amps at Idle be enough to winch and run lights and accessories?
If you want more power, does it make more sense to get the "sealed" units for about the same total price of the bolt on? GM units must be just as easy to get as the nippondenseo OEM units in a pinch.
I'm leaning towards the Load Boss 170 amp since it is cheaper and 170 amps! The LCE bolt on is also tempting since LCE specializes in performance. Can someone give me some advice?

Don't really have any advice to give but I'll definitely subscribe. I can tell you, though, that with my PIAA 520's, and my Warn 9.5ti, this will be something I'll be doing soon. The stock alternator sucks. Usually, if I'm doing real heavy winching, I need to turn off other accessories or I feel like the trucks gonna die and I can still watch my voltage gauge drop at idle. I haven't even tried to see what would happen if I have all my fog lights on (depending on which ones I have on the truck at the time), my headlights on, my wipers on, my 1200 watt amp going and I was trying to use my winch. No joke, the truck would probably shut off. A few times, while I was winching something real heavy (my buddies Bronco out of the mud or a boat out of a lake), I have to sit in the truck with the wheels turned, the brake stomped to the floor and give it some gas to get rid of the feeling and sound of the truck trying to croak. Long story short, I've never had any real problems, but the stock 60 amp or however many amp alternator is definitely not sufficient for LONG TERM heavy winching and running lots of accessories.

From what I have researched and can remember-is the one wire amp/cs130 is the way to go. I plan on doing this one on ebay and making a bracket myself.

Swamp Pirate: I have seen some alternators that say they fit 85-93 but I can never keep track of when Toyota changed parts. kinda drives me crazy sometimes!
My real battle right now is the difference in quality/performance between the open body, bolt on style like from LCE and Loadboss and the cs130 with an adapter. I don't really have the time or capacity to make a custom bracket, but i'm also not excited about forking over another $50. Also, do you think I can wire up the one wire system without an adapter?
I like what Roger did at 4 crawler. Made me temped to get that welding unit too! I might cop his throttle advance cable idea too. I converted my AC compressor into an on board air system and it needs a bit more throttle too.
I like the price tag on that cs130 on ebay. Thanks for the heads up Motox711.
Oh yeah and There are cs130 units that look like they have the mounting holes opposite each other (12 o clock and 6 o clock) and there are some that are offset to one side. will the bracket adapters work with either? and some are "small body". which works better?
