1st gen 4runner/2nd gen pickup marker light blinker mod

After putting a new bumper on my 4runner and having to drive around with my turn signals zip tied to my grill, I decided something needed to be done. I searched a couple of the marker light blinker mods on here and other places, but most of them seemed to be used as a secondary turn signal using the original bulbs and wouldn't be nearly bright enough to be used as a primary turn signal, so this is what I did.

first purchased a universal bulb socket from pepboys that would accept an 1157 dual fillament bulb.

I used a 1 litre aquafina bottle cap per side as a spacer (to be able to fit the 1157 bulb) and it fit perfectly in the half circle piece of plastic that surrounds the original hole. I also had to enlarge the original hole. I used some plastic weld to hold the bottle cap and seal everything up.

Cut the bottle cap to accept the socket, if you cut exactly along the outer edge of the writing on the cap, it fits perfectly for this particular application.

Here is the wiring, I just used the original plug.

Here is the finished product, ready to be installed. The socket is easily removable for bulb replacement.

Sorry for the crappy pics, they are just cell phone shots, I hadn't planned on doing a write up, but it turned out better than I thought and was really easy so I thought I would share. This may not be for everyone, as it eliminates your marker lights, but as a clean solution when your bumper will no longer accept the factory turn signals it works great.

Looks Good. How do those sockets stay in place? Do they pop in and out or do they twist?

I did the same thing about 10 years ago:

My socket was spring loaded with a mounting plate, so I put those two together and silicone sealed that together and then just screwed the plate to the back of the housing:

They pop in and out. I suppose if you had to remove them regularly they may be a bit of a PITA but once every several years or so shouldn't be too bad.

I like that set-up. You didn't have any problem with the bulb making contact with the lens? I've looked at quite a few of your cheap tricks, I guess I overlooked that one.

Heck no!! I liked how you used the water bottle cap! In order to get those 1157 bulbs into my marker lights I had to use lots of bondo and put the bulb in at a wierd angle. Whatever works!!
