Canopy Window Repair on a Budget

I recently broke my passenger-side venting window on my canopy. Anyone who has experienced this aggravating ordeal knows that you simply cannot buy a replacement window from Leer, and having a glass shop cut a custom window is a ripoff. So, after sporting a gaping hole in my '84 pickup for a while, I set out on a cheap fix.

Materials:
  • Optix (plexiglass) 32" x 20" - $10
  • Roll on window tint - $9
Start with a clear sheet of plexiglass. Apparently you can buy these pre-tinted, but they only sell the clear at my local Home Depot. Make a cardboard template from your other (non-broken) window. Cut the plexiglass to size. Use a box knife for the straight cuts, then 'chase the bump' for a rounded corner. Sand the edges until they're smooth.

When I broke the window, I had enough foresight to keep all the mounting hardware. Test fit the replacement window and drill all the holes for the hardware.

Next comes the roll on tint. Just follow the included instructions. Usually it involves wetting the window and squeegeeing the tint on until you get all the bubbles out. Cut the edges and install the mounting hardware.

Almost finished! Mount it with the help of a friend. Not too bad for less than $20. Up close it's pretty obvious that it's a patch job, but it sure beats duct tape and a garbage bag.
