Question remote start+alarm

Does anyone know if there is a remote start avalable that can be used in a 3rd gen 4Runner with a 5 speed? Is there a neutral cancel switch?

There is no safe way to do it without buying a remote start made for a manual tranny.

ANY remote starter can be fabbed up to include a neutral start safety switch into the scheme of things. Some starters have extra inputs for them, but in the end, any of them can be rigged - you just need to cut the power to the starter solenoid if you can't detect neutral.

fwiw, I think all of the Commando alarms have a a neutral safety input. Even their $80 package:

Check the install manual here:

I just haven't found a decent/easy way to rig some sort of "neutral detection system" on my '97. I have tried reed switches but there is not enough movement in the shifter to make it work well. Any ideas?

Ahh... yeah, reeds are gonna be tough to use. Hmm, isn't there already a neutral detection system in place to support the clutch start override?

I don't have a stick so I'm kinda' shooting from the hip here.

I'm kinda' wondering if th "right" way to implement this would be via something internal in the tranny. Anything up on th stick is gonna be hard - like you say, there's not a lot of movement to ensure that you're out of gear.

The clutch start override just bypasses the switch that would close if the clutch was fully depressed, so if you are in gear and hit the button and turn the key you are going to move.

I have been stumped on this one for a while.
