Synthetic to Dino Again

Hey,

This sounds crazy but, I started using mobil1 synthetic in my 93 pickup 22re about 5000 miles ago. Im tired of spending lots of cash on the oil, and was wondering if you could switch back to dino oil without any problems?

thanks

Brendon

Yes you can. If you are tired of spending 4-5 bucks a quart on M1 you could try Pennzoil Platinum. Its 1.99 a quart at Pep Boys after a $15 Mail in Rebate.

How many miles are between oil changes? My truck only sees 7-9k a year so my synthetic gets changed only once a year and that cost me less than $30 an oil and filter change. I can see tho' if you rack up the miles it could get costly.

Yup, but after only 5,000 miles? That's one oil change.

You can do the "change the filter and add the difference" method and save money.

i'd shy away from pennzoil...it's paraffin based and tends to sludge up your engine.

Same here, $35 once a year I dont think is bad.

The parrafin Pennzoil story is just that...a myth. All oils have parrafins in similar proportions.

Very true, and the myth of Pennzoil sludging up your engine is LONG gone! In fact, Pennzoil dino oil, when compared to other dino oils, has produce some of the best UOAs (Used Oil Analyses) around! If you don't want to spend that much money on Mobil 1 (Group IV POA Synthetic) then Pennzoil Platinum is a fine choice, especially fore 2 bucks a quart.

I don't get it??? Yes it costs more, but you change it less. I change my oil once a year up to 10000 miles w/ a filter change halfway. Compared to 4 oil changes using dino every 3 months.

I get the cheapest oil and just change it frequently- it's not worth it to me for all the fancy stuff. If I bought a brand new vehicle, I'd probably use synthetic from the start. I think regular dino is like gasoline- pretty much all the same. I've watched the same 18 wheeler fill a tank up at a Circle K gas station and then go fill a Chevron from my office window. I figure the difference in dino is slight. Just my opinion...

I use Mobil 1 and change my oil every 3k miles. I put quite a few miles on my rig, haven't figure out how many it comes down to a month but I'd say I do an oil change every other month or so.

I want my Runner to last as long as humanly possible so I'm willing to drop a little cash on some oil every now and then.

But in the end, to answer your question, yes that would be fine. I would too stay away from Pennzoil, I have just heard bad things about it ever since I got into the whole car thing when I was 14...it very well may NOT be true but, I have never heard anything bad about Mobil 1.

i've been running valvoline maxlife (non-synthetic) for a little over 1k miles now and i think it's helped my 3.0 leakinmg/weeping quite a bit, actually. engine feels a bit smoother, too.

and yes, you can definitely switch back to dino. i would just not switch back and forth all the time.

Mobil 1 every 3K?? What a waste of money. You could buy a new car in 10 years with all the money you are wasting changing your oil that frequently. Oil is not a miracle cure to extend the life of your car. Oil is only going to make the engine last. There are a lot of other components that will fail that have nothing to do with oil. You will get the max life of your engine with regular oil changes, but you are not going to extend the life by changing your oil with Mobil 1 every 3k.

It only costs about $15-$20 for a change every 3 months, extrapolate that out and it comes to between 600 and 800 after ten years...not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. At most I could save maybe $200-$250 a year by doing it less frequently but I prefer peace of mind over that. We're only talking about waiting 2k miles between changes.
