Sound deading project 1/2 way done- pics and impressions

Guys,

See http://www.4runners.org/articles/sound

Whoa boy, talk about a project that takes the WHOLE weekend (not kidding here!). After a ton of reading and good advice from Bumpin Yota and others, I stripped my 4runner on the inside and applied McMaster's hi-temp mastic and carpet padding on the roof and the floorboard. I decided to skip the side panels but I may do it later. Also, while I wanted to do the door, I didn't do the doors b/c I ran out of time.

Although the McMasters stuff is cheap, there are some drawbacks: namely its not very pliable. Not to say its rock hard or anything like that, but compared to other products like Dynamat, there's no comparison. However, it is very easy to cut and is fairly easy to work with. So my advice is that if you prefer a totally seamless and "professional" looking application, you're better off spending the bucks and getting the other stuff. However, my goal was to deaden the road noise so a professional looking installation was not one of my main priorities.

Putting carpet padding was much easier. Defintely use the 3M 90 Spray Adhesive. Great stuff. I'd like to use it on Gray Davis if he comes into town.

The hardest part is taking the whole vehicle apart. You need a lot of space to put the stuff away. Also, there are snap fasteners everywhere and as you all know, those things break.

Toyota doesn't do a great job of deadening. There are only few places where they use rubber deadener and/or carpet padding:

Here is my 4runner w/ the HTM and carpet padding applied:

The roof had the LEAST amount of padding. There were 3 sections that needed deadening. I put 1 layer of HTM in all 3 sections, carpet padding in 3 of them (1/2 of 3rd section) and another layer of HTM in the 1/2 of the largest section due to space/height issues:

The rear cargo area had some padding and a rubber mat, but not enough. I put more as you can see:

My initial impression: VERY HAPPY. Even my wife noticed which says alot since her Camry is so much quieter. I beleive once I do the doors, it'll be a major improvement over stock.

Of course, a thorough write up will be done as soon as I finish the doors.

Bob

Wow, I have a box of Brown Bread waiting for me in my garage. Great inspiration. I can't wait to get it installed.

Guys,

For the life of me, I couldnt find Peel & Seal in my neighborhood Lowes or Home Depot. I ordered the HTM from mcmasters.com and picked it up at their LA facility. Those guys got their stuff together!

Yeah I hear Brown Bread is great stuff. If you intend to do the whole vehicle, I've already gone through about 60 sq ft of HTM (i think---guess right now). That covers 90% of the floor and 3/4ths of the roof (the areas where you can apply the stuff).

I estimated that the whole vehicle takes about 120 - 140 sq ft. Alot of material!

Good work Bob, That is a painstaking process. I recently did the same thing in my 3rd Gen, except I used Brownbread and Dynamat combo! You are going to be extremely pleased with the end result. My Runner was as quieter on the inside than my 740

Again, nice work

Guys,

I drove the freeways last night and whoa, so much quieter. Its so much quieter now that I actually hear the wind hitting the large mirrors. I'm convinced that it'll make more of a difference once I finish the doors.

The engine noise is what I hear most now. As much as I'd like to deaden the firewall, its alot of work that I can't even imagine doing, given this past weekend.

Also if I were to do it over again, I'd probably suck it up and buy something more pliable like the Brown Bread stuff.

I've noticed that my 94 is much quieter than my wifes 98. recently my daughted spilled an entire Coke on the floor of the 94. I took all seats/carpet out to clean. 95% of the floor was covered with a Dynomat like material and felt. They just don't make them like they used to.

it's very well hidden and not where you would think it would be. I bought one roll after looking for two hours at lowes {homodepot doesn't have it} and I even asked one of the flunkies that worked there and they didn't know what I was talking about. then, I finally found it and bought one roll for $12. Well, two weeks later I decided I better get another roll just in case one wouldn't do both front doors. well, I forgot where it was and started over looking for it, luckily I remembered the particular section is was in and it took maybe ten minutes to find it. you have to look all over the place near the gutters, flashing, roof top vent fans, insulation areas. it is used to seal leaking gutters and flashing around windows. it has blue lettering on white paper, it is called "Peel-N-Seal." it comes in 6"x25' rolls. when I started I realized what I had was a long skinny roll of dynamat and laughed as I was peeling and sticking and rolling it with my wooden roller because I did both front doors and 1 back door for about $24. what does dynamat want for 1 door kit? $80? that is rediculous, and what an improvement! I just did it on saturday afternoon. quick and easy job. Peel-n-Seal is so cheap, I'm going to do the whole inside like bob is.

Looks like nice work Bob!
Funny I was just thinking this weekend about how I could deaden the sound in my truck so that I could hear people more clearly when they're talking to me instead of constantly saying "eh??"

Maybe a project for the not so distant future.
Look forward to seeing it at Pismo

Highland,

Wow, thats great that the 2nd gens have the material in it already. I will say though that the McMasters and the carpet padding does make a big difference.

Keisur: i may have to look at Lowe's again. I'd definitely would like to compare the two. Is it really pliable?

It seemed to be for me. I got a 2inch wide wood roller from the wallpaper section and pressed it down and formed it with that. it's sticky as all get-up! utility knife cut it good as long as you use cut on the metal backed side. it bent around curves and stuff really good. the metal backing never ripped from trying to stretch or anything.

What I have to do though is figure out how to make a bracket for the rear speakers. I used Steve Schaefers design for mine and they are too big and the pocket hits the bracket and won't let the door panel snap on. it sounds alot better though now that the speaker isn't just sitting in the hole with one screw holding it in. hehe and gaps on all sides of it sending all the sound into the door cavity. heh.

sorry bob, I just remembered the layout of each store, It is Homo Depot that has it, not Lowes. I am headed there this afternoon for some more so I'll double check and snap a pic of it with the camera phone and post it so you can see what to look for.

keisur,

i asked EVERYONE from the store manager down to the aisle "specialists" at Home Depot but no luck. I'll try the roofing section again. The pic would be great. Oh, if you could get HD's item code # for the Peel- N- Seal, that would probably be better than the pic.

ok, now I feel like an idiot! My wife just schooled me on the fact that we went to three different HD's and Lowe's that day and I must have gotten confused. I called her just now to see if she remember and she had the receipt and said, Lowes. sorry man. I can get the item number for you and you can have the employees there get it for you. haha.

Keisur,

Thanks, bud. If this product is superior to the McMaster's HTM, first I'm gonna cry like a baby and then I'm gonna kick my own ass!

Wow, looks good. Definitely worth it, but not a fun project by any means.

What my truck looked like before the dynamat install:

Bob,
Im thinking of doing this to my Taco, I looked at the Mc Master website and they have some foam with adhesive backing part # 5692T49. Not the same stuff you used is it? Wonder how good this one is, it has a rating of .8 on a 0-1 scale.

Nice, peel and seal. Will have to remember that. When you do your
doors, are you just doing the area directly behind the door panel
or are you doing the INSIDE of door... ala outer door skin?

I think I will have to do this to my lil pickup when I get the A/C work
complete.

I put a small piece about the size of the speaker hole directly behind the speaker because I figured since I cut it out I might as well use it. I may go back and put more patchy pieces in there but I hate spiders and I'm afraid there's some living in there so I don't want to stick my hands too far in. I guess I is shicken chit!
