R load rated vs D or E rating ???

R load rated vs D or E rating ???
If I a looking at A/T tires for 85% on road and 15% offroad use, what are the disadvantages of running regular R rated vs an 8 ply D or 10 ply E rated tire.
The 8 plys run so much rougher on the road but I am guessing sidewalls are stronger.
What say you ???

What do you mean by R rated tires? like 35x12.50R15... R means radial!!! The ply rating are B (4), C (6), D (8), E (10). Most stock tires these days are a load range B. I use load range C tires offroad, on a toyota I find that to be plenty, and knock on wood, have never had problems. My street tires are an 8 ply, but thats because I run 285's and thats all they come in.
Also with radial tires the plys is a rating. Radial tires dont need the plys like bias ply did.

I meant a straight P metric that quotes wear rating plus traction etc.
e.g 265/75 with 500AB
vs 265/75RR16 D or E etc.

Gotcha.... P as in P235/75R15 is a 4ply rating. LT235/75R15 will proablly be a 6ply rating. I dont used anything on the trail with a P rating. Any LT will suffice, but you probally wont need more than 6ply rating tires.

Get a C rated (LT usually, before the numbers) for your rig. I doubt you'll notice the difference between a LT/C rated tire and a P rated tire. Considering you do some offroading too, it's worth the very very very minor difference.

Thanks all,
I have driven SL, C rated and D rated tires and I really like the ride of the SL rated. That and the fact the the C rated are typically 25% more expensive.
For the amount of off raod work I will do, C would be ideal but the Nitto's start at D :pat:

The price of the Nittos definately went up. I was looking at a 5th for a spare.
