From what I understand, that is correct. That same filter also fits my wife's '93 Lexus GS 300 and my dad's '98 Lexus LS 400 too.

This is absolutely true. I have the 3.4L and my son has the 22RE. The are interchangeable. We do seem to go through a few filters. I also have a Lexus with the 3.0 Inline and it also uses the same filter. This is very convenient. Time to buy a case of filters. PH3414 Fram filter

Yeah, they be bad. The used to be good back in the day, but after being bought out by Honeywell (I think) their quality has dropped dramatically.
Just do a search for Fram on this site and you can see for yourself what others have to say. I personally stick with Amsoil, Mobil 1, Purolator PureOne and OEM filters.

fram is junk. just don't do it!
the best filters i've found are purolator and wix. coincidentally, the ford FL1A filter fits like a glove on a 22R, and has about twice as much oil capacity. it's even called for as the aftermarket replacement for the 2LT diesel! the wix part number is 1515.

short answer on poor quality, I believe, is they don't have n anti-drain-back valve, or something like that. Now then, I'm probably wrong, but I believe that means that if it drains back into the engine it will take all the things that were just filtered back into the heart of the engine, screwing it up.

Did some research and here are some filters to avoid:
http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html Fram Extra Guard Fram Double Guard Penzoil This filter is a Fram! It is the exact same design as the Fram Extra Guard filter and it is junk. On the up side, it costs $1 less than the Fram version. Quaker State This is another Fram Extra Guard that I have seen at K-mart. It used to be a Purolator, but Quaker State is now owned/controlled by Penzoil Some better filters: Atleast better than Fram. AC Delco Duraguard AC Delco Ultraguard Gold Amsoil Baldwin Bosch Car And Driver Deutsch Fram Tough Guard Still not the best filter Hard Driver Mobil 1 Motorcraft NAPA PowerFlo ProLine Purolator Premium Plus Purolator Pure One STP Wix Who new??? Guess I am changing my filter Friday

Most toyota applications cars and trucks included take penzoil part numbers, 21,38,and 39, now there are exceptions but about 95% of toyota produced cars take those filters.

I have been using Wix(lately), Mobil1, and Amsoil. And they are excellent filters. After alot of research and particicpation on http://bobistheoilguy.com/ I have discovered adding a bypass filter to the system is the best way to go. I found some used yet in good shape Frantz bypass canisters and hooked them up to both my 4runners. My oils stays cleaner much longer and the bypass refills amount to $1/pc. Nothing more than a roll of 500 sheet Scott toilet tissue. I don't go for all of the oil testing and "lab research" myself. Just leave that to the other folks who have the inclinations for that sort of thing and apply their findings. I'd recommend a bypass in addition to the regular spin on to anyone interested in excellent filtering. Got one the auto tranny in the '92. And when I get aroung to it, I am going to install them in both fuel systems as well. And to boot, ALL the filters are interchangeable. Weeee!
