I'm looking for a truck for a mountain cruising and hunting rig. I will be used in mud and snow and will be used on atv/utv trails. I am wanting a fuel injected 4 cylinder with a straight axle. Here are the trucks in question.

Let me know what you think and let me know about any possible issues with either of these trucks. I have been looking for a while and these 2 are the best that I have found so far.

I'd stay away from the turbo truck, if what you want is a hunting and mountain rig.

The turbo will give little value in lower speed operation, and some replacement parts are very hard to get.

Personally, I'd buy a $2000 truck and spend the rest of the money making what I want out of it.

Only the 85 has the solid front axle

The turbo truck has the I FS

To tell the truth Toyota`s turbo was a dismal failure why it was only around for a few years .

People seem to want them keeping the prices higher because of demand

If you really want a turbo then go for it .

I have 3 the 3.4 blows them away in pure stock form

If your in a position to build your own truck that is the best way you then know just what you have.

Then buying a used vehicle some areas always get neglected and need to be caught up

As stated in the link I posted. The 86 has an 85 front axle under it and has an aftermarket TEC turbo. I do not have the time or the space to build something. I could do some minor stuff in the driveway, but that's probably about it. I do not have a shop and I have about a million other projects going on right now.

My own personal opinion: no need for a solid front axle. Look at what the atv and utvs on those trails are using

That should open up more options. Nothing wrong with the solid front axle, but I think that the thought that they're necessary or even preferable for any kind of true rough road use is questionable. They have less moving parts to break, but in general they just give a really really rough ride, and IFS can do most stuff better than a solid front. You just want to be slightly more gentle with them.

I agree that I'd avoid turbo.

I ended up getting the 85. Couldn't pass up a LCE engine with only 40,000 miles on it.

I agree completely with the $2000 plus what you want. Where's the fun in buying one that someone else put together. I do know what it's like to have too many irons in the fire though. It's crazy that a ready to roll, old school Yota will set you back that much money when compared to a Ford Ranger or old Nissan. Hell, I only paid $4000 for my 2002 4Runner 4WD SR5 with 135,000 miles. The little car dealership down the street has an extremely clean 91 model 22RE short cab base model pickup with 130K on it listed at $$8,900. I bet that thing didn't cost much more than that new.
