The often over looked 1960s gmc 305 v6.

My grandfather had 2 1966 gmc trucks with the 305 big block v6 one with over 570,000 miles on it when he retired. No major work done, just oil changes.

I know a few ranchers with the same engine still running strong today.

The Nissan VG30E 3.0 V6 is probably the best built V6 on the planet and was only surpassed by the VQ series engines.

The VG30 served in trucks, pathfinders, maximas, Quest minivans, and the venerable 300ZX. You could build those motors from mild to wild on stock head gaskets (to about 400HP) and many of those engines run to 300,000 miles. In trucks and SUVs they are matched up to very well geared 5-speeds.

For the same year of production versus The 22RE or 3VZE you find more original condition high mileage motors with the VG30's.

Visit the Nissan forums and you'll see, the engines are something they almost never complain about and always take for granted.

Hey Guys,

If it does not make power it will last "forever". Simple pysical principals that no auto manufacturer can seem to get around.

I figure 80-90 h.p. per liter is the "reliable" limit, beyond that You have an everyday driver problem. Some motors do it better then others.

The 22re does not make any power to speak of, so of course it lasts "forever", and it still has the dissimilar metal headgasket problem (iron, aluminium expansion rates w/headgasket inbetween). However the injection system is very stable.

G.M. Has proven beyond a reasonable doubt, that the small block chevy is the most reliable motor of all time. In its 265,283,305,307,327,350 and 400 c.i. configuration it is very hard to beat. Search 1 million mile Chevy.

My honarable mention would be the Toyota V-6, the one from the Cressida, the Buick even fire 3.8, I dont know of any bad VW motors, its the rest of the car that drove You nuts, the Audi 5 cyl. is grenade proof, yea I know its a VW, the volvo b24 is unbelievable (never seen a bad one), the Dodge slant 6 is right up there too, and last but not least is the Honda 1.5.

I may have forgotten a motor or two, but in My experience these motors have all Proven that they have what it takes to go 1 million plus.

Thanks Kiwi

Scion(Toyota) 1.5 liter.

I've seen one that ran just perfect in a Scion xB with 300,000 miles. The owner never missed maintenance.

My 3vze went 500,000 on the original HG and I'm sure would still be running if I didn't drive it into a big puddle.

grandpa has a 62 ford pickup with the original inline 6 (and 4speed tranny) that starts everytime and puts along just great. miles are unknown but hes had it for years and years and says he cant remember EVER working on anything but the brakes.. but i have to say, IMO, honda and toyota build the best engines OVERALL. thats just my experience and opinion thou.. have had good luck with the GM 3.8s and ford 5.0s, just the rest of the cars intergrity is junk!

best engines

22re,chev 350 and 4.3 and hate to say it but the jeep 4.0 has to take the win, its bullet proof and makes enough hp and tq to get the job done

I almost bought a 2wd tacoma with 749k miles original engine, auto tranny and never burned any oil, regular maintenance, I think it went through like 7 timing chains though. 2rz?? I think?

22re, 350 chevy, chevy slant 6, 3.4, 2.2L camry motor (cant remember engine code). Any flat 4 engine is really reliable, I saw one with 300k getting a head rebuilt and the factory cross hatch pattern was still on the cyl walls

I'm going to give the 5VZFE another vote here.

BTW my old mechanical engineering professor told us the secret to the VW bug engine lasting so long was the very long head bolts. The longer they are the more they stretch when torquing them down, giving more clamping force. IIRC I think he said the head bolts go all the way though the engine.

Well I guess you have to look at what's usually the first thing to fail. He was a pretty smart guy with 60+ years in the rear view.

Subaru Boxer engine... in general. Its just a strong design. I had a 89 Sub station wagon and the think was like a tank.

I say becuase while Im seeing a lot of high milage engines...there are a lot that need a lot of TLC to get there. The question was 500k W/O a lot of TLC.

My personal fav. Any small block v-8, ford or chevy from the 60's. Why? Lower RPMS reduced the stress on that simplistic, bulletproof design. Guzzles gas, sure..but come WWIII; im grabbing a 67 chevy to drive.

Someone mentioned it earlier so I'm just putting my vote in for the Slant 6.

They have these enduro-like races at the local destruction derby every year: You take a junk car, drain the oil and race around the track until your car explodes.... Winners are usually running a 22RE or a slant 6.
