Hour Meter, wiring to OEM oil pressure idiot light

So I am wanting to put an hour meter on my new truck and here is my idea for wiring..

Tap into the power for the OEM oil pressure light.. wire it to a relay then put the hour meter on the normally closed circuit, and the power coming from the acc position, when the key is on and the enigine isnt running the OEM light is on.. .hour meter wont be on... fire it up get pressure, light goes out.. hour meter comes on...

is my logic correct?

What 'hours' are you wanting to measure or record? ... Seems to me your proposed setup should work if you're specifically interested in 'number of hours the engine is operating at or above threshold oil pressure'.

Off the top of my head, though, it seems to me it'd be a lot simpler to wire the hour meter to an ignition-specific circuit if you'd be satisfied with 'hours the engine is turned on overall'.

Is your low oil pressure light illumintated when your engine is at idle? Mine isnt, as its not supposed to. So this setup would record time anytime the engine is operating, which is my goal. Wiring into the ignition circuit would be much more difficult as you would have to find something that only has power with the engine running, not just in the "on" position, otherwise you would clock engine time anytime you are just rolling the windows up or down with the engine off...

If you are tapping into the wire between the light and the oil switch, I think it would work. (relay grounds through the switch contacts, opens the relay, hour meter stops)

We have lots of equipment with hour meters, and most are wired to an oil pressure switch of their own.

Some are wired to an ign circ, and we have probs with guys leaving the ign on to listen to the radio......the hour meter keeps ticking and we have to change oil (most equipment is on a 200 hour schedule). The equipment only have ign, no accy circuit.

Not to question your reasons, but to find out if it is something that might benefit me also. Why do you want to run an hour meter? Like Yoda said on heavy equipment you do it to track maintenance because there is not odometer. what kind of preventative are you focusing on with the meter?

in other words whats the plan Stan?

why don't you just use the tach signal wire to throw a relay to give power to the hour meter, thats how it rigged for both engines on our boat.

We do have security vehicles that sit and idle for LONG periods of time. If I went by the odo reading on those, it would equal maybe a 10k mile oil change. Someone had done a study that said 200 hrs is aprox = to 3k miles, so that is what we plan.

Course, some of them come in for service 200 hrs past due
