75w-90 vs 80w-90

I am swapping the fluids in my 3rd gen 4runner. I know the rear calls for 80w-90 gear oil. My question is: on the back of the bottle of Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-90, it says that it can be used in applicaitons that call for 80w-90.

Can you use 75w-90 Amsoil synthetic gear oil in the rear???

I figured if they said that it can be used in place of the 80w-90, then I would be fine.

I didn't buy enough 80w-90 and just want to run all 75w-90.

I have used the Amsoil Severe Duty 75w-90 in my rear end for a couple years now, it claims that it is usable in place of the 80 and I have had no issues at all. Go to town!

I used Vavoline 80W-90 GL5 in my 4 speed gear box. I'm not sure I like it. It seemed more difficult to shift into 2nd while going at a slow speed, at first. It seemed to get better the more I drove it but like I said, I'm not sure that I like it.

What is the consensus on the best gear oil to use?

Thats because its 80w-90 is thicker, if you don't like it, use 75w-90. I need to do so myself.

Help . . . anyone know where I could get a pump to put the oil in the gear box. It's a pain in the neck to squeeze the bottle while trying to keep it upright during refill.

Most auto parts stores sell the little hand pumps for gear oil. That is what I use. With gear oil, you really only worry about the 2nd number which is the hot viscosity. So a an xxW90 oil is basically the same viscosity when hot, whether "xx" is 70, 75, 80 or even 90. So if Toyota calls for 80W90 or even straight 90W oil, as long as you run somethingW90 is is fine. Many mineral oils are going to be either straight 90W or 80W90, while most synthetics will be a wider range 75W90 since they don't need as much viscosity improver to make them resist thinning at high temps.
