2000 Corolla engine (1zz-fe) poor design???

My parents own a 2000 Corolla. We've replaced the engine once already, and both have burned a tonne of oil and eventually develop a rod knock when cold. I would be disappointed if I had a 2000 Cavalier or Focus do this, but a TOYOTA Corolla?? How is this so? How did Toyota drop the ball so badly on this engine? This car is usually mother-driven and we check the oil often due to past experience with the 1zz-fe engine. Both engine have had around 50 000 miles when they develop the knock.

I'm a bit incredulous and I'm venting right now... quite disappointed in Toyota on this one.

Anyone else have a bad 1zz-fe?

If it was a sludge issue, couldnt he cure it by running a slightly thinner oil, or even an additive? Along with more constant oil changes.

AHH Yes. the 2000 - 2002 corrolas are known to burn a ton of oil. the oil rings getting stuck is the main issue. terrible design on toyotas part. the problem has apparently been fixed after 2003. My fiance had a 2001 corrola until monday this week. we traded it in for a 2008 Yarrrrrrrrrriss. think pirate. Her corrola burned a quart of oil every couple HUNDRED miles. yes HUNDRED. It was getting ridiculous and we knew we had to unload it before the motor went which couldnt have been far off. I've researched this topic alot and it is a very real problem with those 3 years of corrolas.
