YotaTech now offers RSS feeds

I have to admit I did not know much about this topic until I saw this thread Wednesday.
http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.php?t=67351

I got it activated from the links the Rob provided to me, and this is how you access it with a RSS news reader:
http://www.yotatech.com/external.php?type=rss2

Simply clicking on the URL will show you gibberish, you need a browser that supports the technology, or download a separate reader like Rob suggested:
http://www.feedreader.com/

It works great as I set mine up last night, and set it to auto update the YotaTech feed every five minutes.
Text, pics and more will show up in the reader, just like if you were reading it on the forum.

Heads up for Firefox users!

YT isn't advertising the RSS service on it's normal pages and as such, you won't see the orange box icon in the address list.

To add a live bookmark by hand in FF, do this:
  • Go to Bookmarks | Manage bookmarks
  • In the left pane, single click on the folder you want the bookmark to show up in ("Bookmarks Toolbar Folder" will put it on the toolbar)
  • In the Right pane, single click on the bookmark you want the live feed to be ABOVE
  • From the top menu, click "File | New Live Bookmark"
  • Fill in the Name, then for feed, enter "http://www.yotatech.com/external.php?type=rss2"
  • Click OK
  • Close the bookmark manager
You should now see the bookmark as an "RSS" symbol (the orange box) where you placed it. Click on it, and you'll get a drop list of the latest threads.

Mark, any idea on how to add this feature?

Is it just a link I have to add to the template?

Yeup! All you need to do is to add this line into the main page template anywhere in the <head> section
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="YotaTech - Recent posts" href="http://www.yotatech.com/external.php?type=type=rss2">

(in theory, a break in the line shouldn't matter, but keep it all on one line)
As an example, I tossed it into the head of my main 4Runner page:
http://midiwall.com/4Runner/

I fired up Firefox version 1, and I can not see it on your site, unless I need a plug in.

I also put that code into a test template here, and no luck.
This will be a project for when I get lots of free time to study it more.

You may need something later than v1... That's pretty old these days. Hit CNN.com and see if you can see it. If you can't, then the browser's too old.

Can you drop me a PM or email with a link to the test template? I'll see if it shows up with 1.5. It does show on my main 4Runner page (but it shouldn't anywhere else).

FireFox1 and cnn.com, I see the RSS link, click it, then it takes me to a page with links.

Click them, and I get giberish.

Okay, well, the gibberish is probably 'cause FF1 ain't handling 'em correctly, but that's not the point... it's interesting that you don't see the RSS box on my main 4Runner page. hmmm...

Anyone else with the current FF wanna take a look here and tell me if you see the orange RSS box in the URL line? and... if it doesn't show up, then try refreshing the page when you're looking at it and see if that brings it up.

Past that... I dunno what to tell ya' about the template test. It may be that the templates are getting sucked in after the header section and you have to go elsewhere to get deeper into the boilerplates.

I know you're busy and have better things to do... FF users have a workaround to get a live bookmark, so it's not critical.

Thanks for tryin'!

With Firefox you need to download Sage .

Thats why you are getting gibberish. If you know anything about CSS you can also customize how the feeds look. (Or you can just get the ones they have on the site.)

I also want to say thanks to Corey for doing this. You rock!

Sage will give you a full reader, but Live Bookmarks will work on their own to just give you a list of titles.

I can see the RSS button on Marks site no problem. I am using FF1.5.
Mark, thanks for the above trick to get Yotatech RSS to work under Firefox.

BTW, does having a favicon.ico mess with displaying the RSS icon in the address bar?

Corey -

Place the line of code from Mark in the default template in the "Headinclude" area at the top of the edit style page. I placed it between the <meta> info and the CSS section and it worked for mine (edited for my use, of course).

OK, before I try this again, I need to take off FireFox 1 and install the latast.

Will try to get to it this week, but it amy not happen until the weekend.
Then I will make a test template here you can select from the drop down list in the lower left corner, and it will be named RSS Test.

Got it!
Running FireFox 1.5, followed Mark's info and added in Yotatech, even before I added the code here, since the forum is allready setup with RSS.

You have to choose the RSS Test template in the lower left corner!
When I get the time, I will update the other 4 templates, then do away with the RSS Test template.

It works great!

I need to copy down Mark's HTML code, and your info Mike on where to install it between those two areas.

Nice job Corey!! I'm working on a clickable button to add to the footer for those using other browsers (for my site). I'll share it with you if/when I get it working...

Thanks Mike, is that a button like this?

PS,

Mike, I take it the pic will then be linked to that same code that Mark has I inputted here?

Clicking on it with IE will only show the giberish, and you would have to use that Sage plugin in order to click on it with FireFox right?

EDIT:

Missing pic is now hosted on my site, DSL Reports died where it was hosted.

Thanks!

Umm, can't comment on IE, but with FF, when you click on the icon in the test template, you're taken to the "Add Live Bookmark" dialog which is where you wanna be.

The image isn't showing up for me, but basically it's a small formatted table with link (I got the "inspiration" from my Gallery software). Yes it would contain the same code.

The image is dead for now, www.dslreports.com is dead in the water right now where I got it from.
I can not even get to their forums.

They go down quite often, they have a crappy host I think.
