Dood!!
You've gotta move out of your area and move next to me in Logan Heights/S.E. San Diego! NOT!!! Hope you get it back. I'll keep my eye out around here.

Frank,
Not to be a downer but just so you aren't unrealistically optimistic - the 4WDs are very popular in Mexico. Considering your proximity to the border, well... You've reported it to the cops, right? They'll know if it went over the border or not. All the same though, I hope you get your truck back. |

Well, I'm not sure how SDPD or the other depts. run it but at my dept. it's standard to get the plate and run it with the border patrol to see if it's crossed the border. If you think it was stolen around 2 am and they haven't had it cross the border yet then you may be in luck.
Typically if a stolen car's destination is Mexico it's usually there within a few hours after the theft. If it's not then the thief may intend on keeping it local. Good luck with this. |

I fear that they probably took it across the border before I reported it. However, are you saying that they should have recorded the plate number anyway and should have record of it heading south? That would be nice to know if so.
The plate number is 6Y54500. Frank

Yeah, I'm not sure how it works but they have technology that records the plate numbers of everything that goes across. They can't corroborate it with stolen vehicles though. Don't know why.
As for your plate number. Due to the confidentiality issues surrounding CLETS/NCIC - no law enforcement agent can look up any plate without specific justification to their current responsibility. I once asked if they could run my plate to see if I had anything pending (didn't know if I was late or not on registration fees) and they couldn't run it. |

I live in San Diego as well - my '86 4WD 22R was a constant target. Attempts were made at least 4 times from my house in OB and at work in LJ; the ONLY thing that kept it in my possition was my homemade kill switch.
One time I went to get my truck after work and it had been broken into (maybe 3rd of 4th time); the only trace of my CLUB was one of the tumblers. Door lock was busted and ignition key cylinder gone. Battery was low from the a=holes trying to start it but I flipped the kill toggle and she fired up for me. Sorry to hear about your rig... hope you get it back -s |

Sorry about your truck. I've often tried to think of great ways to deter thieves from messing with my vehicles. In college, after having my stereo stolen from my GTI, I cut the key pad off an old hand calculator, repainted it, put a flashing LED light on it, and in white lettering labled it "Compularm TS-1". I never had another stereo stolen. I still have the pry marks on the ignition in my truck from some thief that must have gotten spooked before he could steal it. I park me truck on the street these days. So, I guess I better figure something out.
I hope they find your truck soon!

Sorry to hear about your 4runner..hope you get it back and the culprits are caught. For the future, you make want to consider some theft deterent devices (alarm, "club" etc). I don't like the "clubs" that just go around your steering wheel. The ones that lock you brake petal or brake petal and clutch seem to be more effective. It's also a visual deterrent..possibly making the would-be thief go to the next vehicle.
