Why is cylinder 1 clean and the others dirty?

Hi,

I am doing a head gasket / timing chain on my 22R-E. I got the head off today and take a look at my block - does this look right?

Cylinder 1 is clean and shiny. 2-4 are black and sooty like I was expecting them to be.

I am doing the head gasket because I was burning coolant - not sure if it's because of a failed head gasket or failed timing chain guides. At this point I am thinking gasket.

My drivers side timing guide was broken but not worn through that I can tell, I don't have the timing cover off yet, so I don't know for sure.

Thanks for your input, I never would have tackled this job without this forum!
Tom

Because the coolant entering the cylinder via the bad head gasket steam cleaned it for you!
