for the record I believe my Pickup came stock with 31 Inch tires and according to the sticker it has 4.56s with a manual tranny.
Not sure what size tires came with my 4Runner, but the door sticker on it says it has 4.88s with an auto. Both are V6.

I've got 30" tires on my 88 4Runner and stock 4:10 gears. I noticed a loss of acceleration and the ability to hold highway speeds in 5th gear on moderate grades. 4:88's are on my list of things to do to it so I can get the stock feel back.
With the automatic, you're on the losing end of a battle since your engine turns higher rpm's already compared to a stickshift in any particular gear.

My V6 auto came with 31s and 4.88 and was still a dog in OD. 3rd gear in an auto is 1 to 1, 4th gear in a manual is 1 to 1. 3rd in auto = 4th in manual.

I suppose I stand corrected. I forgot about the lockup. But I wouldn't consider locking the torque converter another gear.
But the OP was looking for acceleration anyhow.

But its a 4-speed auto tranny without the lockup, right? Or does he have no OD gear in that model?

This is why I should avoid transmission discussions.

Tacho75, what model tranny do you have? Specificly, what's your final drive ratio? I'm guessing its .71 to 1, but I seem to remember some early models had no OD gear...ie they were 3-speed autos.

Stock gearing is fine (4:10) but 4:56 gears are probably the best for 31's, try not to go any lower because I had a 4:88 rear end in my 88' runner (refer to sig for motor trans. combo) and it was a dog.

abe wont 4:88's be a lil much for a 30" tire?
my 864r has 33x9.50's and 410's its not bad at all, even on the freeway. though i do find myself going a smidgen faster than everyone else

probably a bit much for now. But roads I used to be able to maintain 65 in 5th with the 225/75's require a shift down to 4th to keep speed. I'm just looking at the future: I do plan on larger tires, probably 33's to fill the wheel wells since I've got a 4" bracket lift... and might even be adding long travel on top of that in the next few months... but am aiming at a 33-34" tire when I'm done so having to deal with being over-geared for a while is just a little bit of fun.

Mine is an 86 runner with 4 speed auto, 4.3 gears and 31's. She seems to have plenty of zip, comparable to my 4.3l blazer.

exactly....Bob hit it right...with a autotragic you will want some 4.88's for 31's..and 5.29's for 33's....
but it might be easier for you to do a tranny swap to a manual..lol that'll give ya a little gain

check your gear code in the VIN...mine is G252( i believe that's the correct code) which is 4.56's!!! mine came with 31" tires stock though
if you're came with 31" tires from the factory..then you got 4.56's..but if you came with 29's..then you got 4.10's

You can run 31s stock. if it really bothers you, you can swap to 4.56s... no point though... you'll want 33s or 35s in the future.
