Question Vibration issues

Hi I just purchased this 95 4runner 4x4 SR5 V6 and it has a vibration when it is driven. The vibration starts around 35/40 ish and seems to be worse 55/60 and when letting off the gas at a steddy speed 60 ish the vibration is there but not as bad, but when I slow down from that speed (not applying break) it vibrates reall bad. When I gas on it then the vibration smooths out some.

I have replaced the drive shaft u joints front/rear (someone said that was the prob) but no luck still vibrates.I guess not a loss cause @168,000
I have new pads/breaks turned rotors and drums, new shocks (not installed yet) gosh I just have been replacine stuff because the normal maintiance was not done.I have changed the trans fluid & filter, oil ect

I had someone tell me it could be the transfer case yoke nut loose but I don't have a pounding vibration just a kinda rolling grinding or something like that

thanks for any info on this problem I don't want to give up on this because I'm allready attached to her ....

Check all the parts of the shaft and the t-case and pinion flanges for play. Also check the phasing of the u-joints:

And if that is all OK, try some of the tips listed below:

Thanks guys for the info I didn't replace the drive shaft and the yokes appear to be in good condition.I had someone say it sounds like the torque converter and the vibration was there before I messed with the u joints could it be from the engine?

update guys...I took the 4runner to the shop today and they had it all day driving it burning up my gas and the result of there investigation is....they don't know they said maybe a bent drive shaft, bent short cv shaft, they thought it was coming from the timing belt maybe had lost a tooth but they said that it would be idling rough or something like that so they ruled that out. There were 3 so called mechanics smoking it over and scratched there heads said I can't tell you what to do next.....58.00 for the head scratching and i'm back to square 1.....it is a rolling issue I know and doesn't vibrate when sitting at idle....the did say that the 4runner is slow I said I know but the timing is set and maybe it just needs plugs & cap/rotor & wires?.....I know it has high miles and 31.50 x 10 new tires that dont help maybe there is a compression problem but it appears not to reall blow smoke ao anything... they did say that maybe the tranny but it shifts fine and the vibration is still there when I put it in nuteral......so any more advice?...what do I do now...

the answer to that question is yes the tires are ballanced, I feel as though I have run into a brick wall with this issue.....thanks for your input Mike... I have a question most of the 6 4runners 4x4 v6 that I drove before I purchased this one all felt like they were under powered is this normal for these 4runners and the ECT button does help...what is your opinion on this matter??

did you check the oil in the rear diff? check for metal shavings. also, get a friend , put the truck up on jack stands, and have your friend get it up to the vibrating speed, and it sounds bad enough that you should be able to see something wobbling. id try that. it sounds like something with your drivetrain, not your engine, since it doesnt vibrate in place. just be careful, and USE JACK STANDS DO NOT RELY ON A JACK. JACKSTANDS ALL AROUND! BE CAREFUL! these trucks seem to like to hurt us.

maybe, but check anyway. doesnt hurt. also lift it up on jackstands and have someone drive it up to the speed where it vibrates, and keep it there and look for a wobble. maybe you will see it, maybe not. just for godsakes be careful.

im here in atlanta too. What do your tires look like maybe you need to rotate, may not hurt to rebalance. If your starting to cup or havent rotated them that can cause some issues. Atlanta traffic kicks ass

Ok Guys here's an update ....I new that the 4runner was slow but I didn't realize until this evening after work how bad the power really was.I purchased some tune up parts and when I got to the distributor cap and rotor it was really bad I'm talking trashed here....the contacts that stick up and make contact with the rotor 3 were & almost a 4th one were scraped away and the rotor tip was eating into my cap!....WOW!....what a drag I have never seen a cap so bad before (how does it get that way maybe from it being installed incorrectly? or just no one changing it?) Well Now I feel like I have most poneys now maybe all if I change the spark plugs which I have....

Ok listen to this...I think I have found where the vibration is by accident.I was checking the fluid in my front axel and had a flash light handy.I was looking for something in the front end that was vibrating because i feel like that's where it is coming from.I saw some really black oil kinda sludge dripping down from the drivers side and looked to see with the flash and to my surprise it was coming from the cv boot(@ the axel not the one just behind the spindel just to let u know). I looked at the boot and there was no obvious boot tear so I took my hand and pulled back on the boot and it was a seem seperation
and the cv joint is trashed don't know how long it has been that was because I just purchased it July 1st and my guess is a long time to ruin the bearings

well i guess you found it. I wouldn't have even thought to check there because i swaped out for some manual hubs so my cv joints don't move when unlocked. Get those fixed, take it for a test drive and see if its gone!

Thanks Mike....I hope this will be a fix and I guess that maybe the good side to having cv's is that I can shift into 4h at any speed BUT! if I had locking hubs I would not have this problem....thanks for the help i'll update on Sunday or Monday.....
