Bra did you read the newbie mod thread? It answers some if not all of these questions. As far as cheap/good locker, go to the offroad section and read the locker sticky. Popular is the aussie/lockrite in the rear and ARB in the front. Although the ARB isn't cheap like the aussie, its nice for those who DD their rigs.

aussie is cheap and seems to hold up well. ARB is $$$ but nice.
The stock skid plates are ok as long as you are not beating the hell out of it. The muffler is pretty durable also. Upgrading to stronger plates are nice, but if you drive careful and get out and look under the truck in the hard spots you should be ok.
