Spare tire removal - seized?
Alrighty - Thought this post belongs in the newb section...
So got a flat the other day, and tried without luck to lower my rear tire. (89 Ln106 - hilux - to my knowledge same system as my 86 xtra cab..) So I connect all the rods with the end piece being the hook that normally turns the bottle jack - fish it through the bumper (above) and into the slot. Lefty loosey but no dropping of the tire. So I pounded on the assembly from below a bit to get some of the road junk out, no avail...
any ideas on a next step? Was going to spray the whole thing down with degreaser... perhaps deflate the tire.. etc. it hands on chains connected to a spring loaded thingy.
Help please!

Clean up the mechanism and spray, multiple times, with PB Blaster. If that gets you nowhere, then a grinder with a cut off wheel is about your best bet.

Mine is frozen, like many others.
What I'm gonna do in the spring is to cut the chain, get it out of the mechanism, and keep the retainer that's on the end.
Then I'll tack weld a hook to my rear bumper or a frame rail, and run the chain to that. You could set it up to require a key (padlock) or something, for security - mainly security from falling off on the road! 2 'loops' (holes reamed in angle iron, maybe?) would let you do that pretty safely, running the chain thru and pinning with the lock....
Just something I've been thinking about; no fun keeping the spare in the tiny bed!!

Well I will try the pb blaster method and hope it loosens things up - I actually bent (twisted) one section of the rod trying to loosent the damn thing.. sucks this keeps me away from my valve seals this week! Figure I should get this solved before I get stuck somewhere really bad.
I'll let you know how I make out!

I have fixed two really bad tire carriers. Let it soak in PB Blaster for a couple of days. While waiting, just keep adding a little more. It will free up eventually. After getting it freed, just have to cycle it up and down several times.
Once I get it working real good, I go a couple of times a year and just had some grease to it. When you do your oil changes is a good way of remebering to do maintainace on your tire carrier.

Yep, I sprayed the one on my 83 with liquid wrench and white lithium grease every couple days, over the few month period that it was sitting in my garage being rebuilt. Eventually it broke free, and has worked ever since. I don't live in a very rust area, though...

I was able to get mine old spare to lower about halfway. I wound up just cutting the chain, throwing the spare tire and rim away, and have my full size 33x1250 spare in the back of the runner.

I just joined this site for the same problem. I have been spraying PB and banging on what I can. I also bent my hook rod assembly trying to lower it. There is no direct access to the winch but I may end up cutting off the retaining piece at the bottom of the chain if it doesn't break loose soon. Thanks for all the advice up there.

In the trucks I keep meaning to make a mount that it swings on in line with the side of the bed just one more project that never gets done.
