Rough Idle and Running Rich

i accidently started my truck with the ecu unplugged on my 86 toyota 22r. i changed the plugs but the truck still runs rich and a lot of black smoke comes out. I was wondering if the timing on ignition might be the problem.

22r (carbureted) or 22re (fuel injected)?

The "ECU" for the 22R doesn't really do much - just the electric choke IIRC.

In either case, the ignition is controlled by the distributor, not the ECU.

My guess is that you actually mean 22RE and the ECU reset to original specs, and needs some time to "learn" your truck again and adjust the fuel mapping.

I believe you just need to unhook the wire.

Does it run OK once it warms up?

Is it possible for you to take a picture of it or the wire?
