I have a 1996 Toyota Tacoma, It's a 2 wheel drive, but I have wanted to start off roading recently, and I was wondering if I would be able to off road on it.

not really. maybe prerunner style. i wouldnt take it on any trails alone tho

not a good idea to run alone even with 4wd. But at RC park her e in pa, I run alot of the trials in 2wd. I don't see why not, just don't run yourself into bigger obstacles without recovery gear and another truck. Get yourself a good recovery strap. (not a tow strap). There is a difference, a recovery (snatch) starp is designed to stretch. A tow strap is not.

you can start out wheeling it, then youll wanna do more.. so youll sell your tacoma and buy an early gen truck with lockers and some 33's or 35's with the money from the taco. at least this is how i forsee it happening lol

The best offroad modification you can do is to buy a locker.
Most notably, a lockright. Which will run about 300 bucks.
With a lockright in the rear end you'll be able to go almost everywhere a stock open/ open 4x4 can go.

^^^ he is right, but if its me, i would just bite the bullet, sell and get a 4x4. itll pay off in the end. especially if you get an older one. then you can get 4x4 and a locker. just MHO

oh man.. okay, you have an open differential. so when you turn the wheels spin different speeds. now when youre offroading and you lift one wheel od it starts to spin only that wheel will get power. with a locker the wheels get locked to gether and both will spin. you have a LOT of searching to do. go read everything you can in the newbie tech section and the FAQ's

4wd is so much better in the snow than just a locked rear diff

I grew up in AR and did a lot of dirt road / timber access road driving with my 93 toyota 2wd and my brother's 85 2wd (boy was that thing low). It can be a lot of fun as long as you don't mind wading out into the mud and poking sticks down in your tires and pushing while the smallest passenger tries to drive. ; )

On similar terrain it really is boring having 4wd. No suspense and fear of being stuck and walking for 2 miles to get help (didn't have cell phones). 4wd makes for a lot better hill climbing and ground clearance keeps you from tearing stuff up as easily.

Try finding some guys around that have 4wd yotas and just ride along. You'll get addicted and end up getting a truck thats more suitable for it.

There have been a few trails I've started up thinking I was in 4WD, both times I only made it about 100 feet before I got stuck. I'd lock the rear diff thinking WTF... it didn't really look like a difficult trail. Even after locking the rear diff I'd still be stuck. Then I'd get really serious and lock the front diff...still stuck. Finally I'd realize I was in 2WD and throw the lever and go LOL. Its really embarrassing when you're with about 20 other guys.

Most importantly, get to know your truck first (other than the fact that it's 2wheel drive) before you end up in a position you don't wanna be in or worse.

Nope, east coast that doesn't count...... Add one part wet and one part incline and the 2wd isn't going to make it

I agrea locker and 2wd in snow is a bad idea, especially a pickup that don't have alot of weight in the back. Is tricky even for a 4wd truck in the snow with a locker.
