Hey guys, I'm Connor, I'm from Charlotte, Nc, and I have a 1982 Toyoota 4x4. I want to work on the motor quite a bit. I sold my 1978 chevy 1 ton with 12 inch lift on 44s and got my yota. My chevy had a 350 with a rear mount turbo running 11psi, and it was a monster. i know my toyota will never be near the hp of my chevy, but i want it to be all around better. I sold my truck because it got 2mpg, and I wanted something to rock crawl with that is not so gassy. My toyota so far has a 4 inch sus lift and 3 inch body on 35s. With 4.88. I have 2 trannys for it, and the 4 speed is in it, and i got a 5 speed, but I was wondering if it is worth swapping? also, should i go with 5.29s or 5.71s? I am working on getting all the parts for my turbo setup. I wanted to do a rear mount but they aren't good on a 4 banger. so I got the steedspeed manifold, and intercooler, piping wastegate, and BOV. All i need is the oil lines and turbo. I am wondering if I should get the outlaw 527 cam from LC? thanks..

Welcome to yotatech. Here are a few things to consider:

1) You may want to post this in the newbie tech section, it will get more responses there.
2) If you are going to drive the truck on the highway the 5 speed tranny is worth the swap otherwise leave the 4 speed in there if it is in good working order.
3) Go 5.29 only if you are not going to go bigger than your current 35's. If you are planning bigger than 35's change your gears and axles and axle housings accordingly.
4) The outlaw 527 cam from LC you mentioned is not only the worst cam they offer for rockcrawling, it would also not work well with a turbo set up. To rockcrawl you want a LOW off idle torque curve, the outlaw cam doesnt kick in until 3000 rpm. You want lower lift with forced induction set ups because of the extra pressure in the cylinders and for a smoother idle, the outlaw has the highest lift of any 22r/re cam LC makes. You shouldnt ever get above 5,000 rpm or so rockcrawling for any reason, the outlaw goes up to 8000 rpm (you wouldnt even be using the upper end of the cam). I would go with one of there turbo camshafts as they are speced to go specifically with a turbo set up.

thanks for the help. I have seen some turbo cams, they have less lift, and if i remember correctly less intake/exhaust duration too. and you are saying 5.29s are enough. The reason why i mentioned 5.71s is for a better crawl ratio, but i might change the transfer case gears.

5.29's is usually recommended for 35" tires. If you want lower crawl ratio you can put 4.7 gears in your t-case or do dual cases if you wish. If you ever want to go bigger than 35" you will have to change your R & P again so it may be easiest to go a little lower the first time if you think you will be going bigger in the future.
