Newbie Oil Change and weight?

What's the longest oil filter I can use? I moving to Cheyenne with my 1989 1st Gen. So I am also wondering what weight I need to change to. I am currently in Southern California.

In Wyoming it's gets pretty cold so I would just use 10W30 nothing heavier than that or you might tax the oil pump a bit

I came up with that because when I used to have an 86 4Runner in California I ran 20W50 year round. Then, when I would drive to Montana in the winter and it would get into the teens, the oil pump would whine on cold starts because it was struggling to move the really thick oil that had been sitting all night freezing. My mechanic at the time confirmed this.

Oil weight is based on the temp, lubrication, clearnaces, pressure, cooling...... 10W30 is about what most yotas runs because most places are average temps like 30-90 degrees year round. but if you go to a place where its always 100+ then like pruney81 said he used 20W50 in cali due to the temps.... if you live in place like alaska you will prolly use 5W30 or lower......

Here in Mass I run 10W30 year round and it does fine. If, I'm not mistaken the first number in the sequence is the thickness of the oil at startup, i.e. the 10 in 10W30.
Then when it warms up it acts as a 30 weight.
