sounds like the alternator have you had any recent problems with it or anything else like this

i had to put new contacts in the starter but besides that no

Check the obvious things first, ie the belt.
My 86 Shredded the belt and I just assumed it was the alternator. Several miles down the road my temp gauge was nearing the red, but i got her home before it got too hot. New belt and I was right as rain.
