I just purchased a 1988 truck, 22r engine with 135,000 miles on it. I performed the first oil change two days ago with the intention to use a Napa Gold filter 1348. They were out of stock so I went with the Napa Silver 31348. The Napa employee told me that the 31348 does have the anti-drain back valve. I intend to use Toyota OEM filters in the future and will have some this week. So-is the Napa Silver filter "good enough" or should I replace it right away? Because of the location of the oil filter on a 22r, can I just spin off the Napa and replace it with the OEM filter without draining the oil?

I really would not get that worried unless you plan to not change your oil for like 50,000 miles .

I know people that go to Jiffy Lube and use those cheap filters and make out ok except for the oil drain plugs falling out or being stripped.

Thanks wyoming9. I am probably overly concerned indeed, but being a new to these trucks I wanted to play it safe. The owners manual states oil change intervals around 10,000 miles, I'll shoot for between 3,000 and 4,000 miles and do my best to go easy on the drain plug threads!

The people at quicky oil changes use impacts to remove plugs and get them cross threaded going back in.

I run the K&N filters on my truck. They seem to be really good. I also run Rotella 15/40 oil. I change fluids between 3&4 thousand miles... I can't say that I've ever had a issue.

Absolutely I'm a newbie on these forums for about 6 months and to Toyota pickups for nearly two years now, and was offering another friendly advice... IMO, there's a difference between being brand new and a participant for a few months. And prior to posting anything on these boards I was reading here and other forums for about a year before signing up, realizing what it takes to avoid angering the cranks... Throughout I've been actively participating and learning whatever I can -- not something that should be ragged on IMO.

I've never seen a question asked about NAPA silver oil filters...has anyone else? I was kinda curious myself.

OP - Apologies if I offended. Not my intent. Napa Silver/ProSelect are made by Wix and are their lowest end product. Napa Gold are equivalent to the Wix branded filters in the reviews in previous links. General consensus reading blogs, especially Bob's, on Napa Silver appears to be that they're better Fram -- not a high bar -- but component review below might indicate otherwise... Whenever I go to Napa to get filters, the counter guy only gives me the choice of the Napa Gold. I think the first time, I asked if there were any other choices and what the price difference was. I figure for $4 or so extra every 3000 miles, you might as well get the Gold. It's not going to break the bank

EDIT: OP, I wouldn't say it's a bad move. At least you didn't buy a Fram filter

So Wolf28 You can tell me that every quick oil change shop in the World is the same as yours?? I can only go from what I have seen in person .

Thanks for all the input folks. I actually had read some of the links provided before posting my question, but did not see any information on the forum regarding the Napa Silver anywhere. I just wanted to play it safe and seek some advice rather than make a naive mistake. I really appreciate the knowledge and experience on the forum- it will help me take on repairs and maintenance that I would not have attempted otherwise. Thanks again.
