Guys i have a 1986 sr5 extra cab 4x4. I am trying to figure out the gear ratios in my truck. All i have is my Vin, there is no plate with my trim or anything of that matter anywhere on the truck.

Ive been looking at http://www.off-road.com/trucks4x4/ar....jsp?id=274535 trying to decode my vin for this info but im just not seeing what i need to see..

most likely you have 4.10:1 gear ratio. If yours is an auto, it may have 4.30. Look on the firewall for the tr/axle/ gear plate. You only need your VIN to determine if yours was japanese built, which it is since it is an '86

The 31" tire package started in '91 or '92 (don't remember which) so you don't need to worry about that.

If your talking about the axle ratio then there is an easy way to figure it out. Jack up one rear wheel, turn it 2 complete turns and count the number of turns the driveshaft makes. Around 3 and 3/4 = 3.73, just under 4 = 3.90, just over 4 = 4.10, 4 and 1/3 = 4.30, 4 and 1/2 = 4.56, and so on. If you want to get more accurate turn the wheel 20 times and divide the driveshaft turns by 10. If you tape the end of a piece of string to the shaft then you can just count the number of times the string is wrapped around.
