Question Max tire size that will fit under 1996 Tacoma?

Hello,
I have recently acquired a new (to me) Toyota truck and am going to be doing some mods. to it. Before I do however, I am going to be making numerous posts looking for some help, information, opinions, advice etc. Any and all input is greatly appreciated, thank you! Vitals: 1996 Tacoma, 4x4, X-cab, 3.4L V6, 5 spd.)

I am building this truck as general hunting vehicle. I will not be rock crawling or “Bajaing” it… I just want something that will do some good wheeling and or mudding to get me safely in & out of my favorite hunting spots.

Since it will be 90% for off road, I need to get some off road tires on it first. I’d like to put some 33 inch tires under it but probably NOT 12” wide. Anyone know of a good size like 33x10.5 or so? Can I fit 33’s under it without a lift? I don’t think that I will need nor will I get my Return on Investment for a suspension lift but I might want/need to put some small spacers on it for a body lift of 1.5 – 2”? Any thoughts on that? Just want to gain a little extra ground clearance, so 33’s will probably be fine for me and that way I won’t have to worry about re-gearing it either. I am also thinking about putting some after market fender flares on it too, so I can cut out the fenders if nec. To fit the taller tires. I guess what I am asking is, what if anything would I need to do to fit 33’s under it and if that sounds like a reasonable choice?

Thanks,

Its preference, but putting on 33's without a regear will cause you to lose some guts. Its doable, but just as a heads up.

My suggestion - put stock size mud terrains on there and see how she does for a season, then plan out next season. You may be pleasantly surprised how well it does straight up.

Hello and thanks. I did search and continue to search... there is just so much info. and "speculation" on the subject that it seems to get convoluted...? I will keep looking and sifting through it but if anyone has anything to add, please do so. So far it looks like 32's are probably the "MAX" for a stock rig, but since I am willing to put on a small body lift and or fender flares, that adds more variables?

I was just hoping that maybe someone has put 33's on theirs, without a suspension lift and without rubbing and could tell me if I would need body spacers and or flares and what size etc.?

thanks for the info, I'll keep sifting through all of the topics from my search.

P.S. I am hoping to keep the stock rims too... 15x7? I think? and I prefer narrower tires to wide ones... I do a lot in the snow and like to cut through it to terra firma, and the extra MPG is nice too.
thanks again,

255/85/R16 fit on the truck stock with some minor trimming in the back and a bit in the front. Fits on the stock wheels too.

Truck is probably plenty capable for what you want to do with the stock tires size. Put on some super swampers or Trxus M/T's and see how it does.

Wink

Yeah, you're probably right, it will probably do most all of what I expect it to do with stock sized aggressive tread tires. Right now my rims are 15” though… I was just thinking that since I need new tires anyway, might as well up size a bit for some extra height & ground clearance and aesthetics too... Since I don't want to re-gear and lose top end speed, I know I can't go too big... was just hoping to maybe get some 32's or 33's under it? I also would like to do some suspension and or body mods... I don't know if I want to spend the $ on a full blown 4" IFS lift but have found some interesting posts on here about shackle kits, body spacers, and “beefier” front springs & shocks etc. that aren't too expensive and claim to give an excellent ride and add 1&1/2 - 2 inches.

I need new shocks too, so I might look into something like that with 32's ? With the 3.4 Ltr, 5 speed, do you think that I will lose that much power with stock gears and 32’s or 33’s? Just wondering?
thanks,

For what you're doing, spacers like Cornfed or Toytec would be sufficient. One of our OHTTORA guys has a '99 Taco running 33x10.50's with Fabtech coilovers (about 2" lift)and AR steelies. He thinks he could fit them stock height on the stock rims.

I also did a search for fender flares and tire size. I'd like to know how the bushwacker cut out flares work with 33x12.5 tires. The bushwacker site says a lift is needed to run them... They look cool though and since my truck needs a paint job and body work it would be a good time for me to add them.

I looked and didn't see much of anything concerning max tire size and bushwacker cut a fender flares. Maybe you can point me to the extensive coverage.
