Idle Issue

Between shifts the motor revs to around 3k rpms then drops down to 1500rpm where it idles right now. I just purchased it(87 4runner 22re) I have only replaced the plugs so far. I am going to replace the o2 and remove cat. next, is there anything else that could cause this issue? Thanks in advance from a forum newbie.

Doug

I'm assuming a manual? There is a little dashpot that is supposed to hold the throttle right off idle when decelerating or letting off the throttle, could be sticking I assume, but i've never seen it rev the motor up that far. Its located below the the throttle body (kinda sorta). check it and the throttle linkage, might have some binding.

Mine used to do that, but it doesn't anymore, so I guess it fixed itself

I spoke too soon, I guess. After about 18 months of not idling high, it started doing it again the other night while I was driving home. Idle was around 2,000RPM, and then after a while, it was about 1700RPM

wait, yours is a V6... do you know if it has an idle adjustment screw on the throttle body?

I don't quite know where the idle adjustment screw is. I'll look tommorow when I get your pics.

2nd Gen 4runners always have idle issues. Its just what they come with when you buy one. It stops for a while then comes back. Tune it up it stops then comes back. Its hard to totally eliminate the messed up idle issues or rumbling and missing. Toyotas are old yet wise machines. They get cranky everyonce in a while but calm. But yea adjust your timing and you'll be good for a while until it shakes back into place.

Try adjusting the idle. It was the miracle cure for all my idle woes.

you could need to adjust you'r idle but it's more likely, at least through my experience that it's either a leak somewhere in your intake or it's your timeing chane. Get some soapy water in a spray bottle and spray it around your intake. If you see bubbles blowing around a spot you know it's a hole. You can also spray carb cleaner around and if you find a spot that you spray it and the rpms go up you know you know you have a vaccuum leak. it also could mean you'r timing just off. you can check it yourself if you have a timing light or if you want a mechanic to do it it's usually like 50 bucks or so. It could also be your timing chain which would suck and the only way you could check it is to take off all the covers and the fan and look at it and if you do that you might as well replace it anyways.
