For most 80's era trucks, clutch pedal free-play is .2 - .6 inches. I understand that you're asking about the rod in the slave cylinder, but maybe the above spec will help. As Scuba wrote, we need more info on year, model, etc.

Red face

There have been so many stories about people getting the wrong parts in the correct boxes as of late.

What if anything have you changed ??

Are you having a problem getting the transmission into gear??

There are different length slave cylinders The clutch release bearings are also different between years..

It can turn into a real headache at times.

So tell us what is happening ??

My cousin has a 98 4runner w/ 4cyl. He is having trouble with his tranny. When he pushes down the clutch pedal it wouldn't go into gear, easily. He just slams it into 2nd gear then revs it and rolls sometimes. The trans shifts nice through all gears when engine is off. My first look @ his Runner slave cylinder, I noticed a leaky connection from the hose that supplies fluid pressure. I fixed the leak, but no luck. Clutch master cylinder looks good clean fluid, no leaks. I did notice the spring above the clutch pedal is almost worn through the bracket. When I bleed the system the pedal stays on the floor after I pump, hold then bleed on slave and close nipple. His tweeker buddy( no offense meant) installed the slave cylinder and lost the rod, he used a wood lag bolt instead, haha. The lag bolt was recently changed out for a longer bolt, it now engages better. Does any body know how long the shaft for the slave cyl. might be so I can make him one on my lathe? Do you think it might be the same length as mine from my 94 4x4 3VZ pickup? Sorry so long, I feel sorry for his Runner it used to be so nice.
