Hey boys...help a girlie out...rear drive shaft help!

So I have a 88 pickup 4x4 shortbed. It was previously 4wd...but converted to 2wd...dont know why...dont ask lol. The rear drive shaft/line (been hearing two different terms for the same part...why?) basically popped out, broke the bolts off, has a dent in the middle, and the joints are locked up. Basically kked beyond repair. It has been hard for me to find a rear drive shaft from a toyota pick up. But I have heard that a 4runner drive shaft with a specific year would do the trick. I don't know the year though, and I was told that the 4runner had to be 2wd as well. Help this newb out. Por Favor.

if the former owner took the 4x4 trans and transfer case out and replaced them with 2wd trans, the drive line angle may be to steep. this can cause alot of problems. is there still a 4x4 diff. in the front or is it a 4x4 body on a 2wd frame ? this can make a difference on the type of drive line.

First, your drive-line or drive-train is all of the mechanical worky bits that make your car physically move, and that includes the drive-shaft or propeller-shaft that runs between your transmission (2wd) or transfer case (4wd) and your rear axle's differential. If you don't mind gettin a little dirty and crawling under your truck, check to see if there is a 2-wheel-drive transmission on your engine (it basically tapers to a point where the driveshaft connects) or if it has the big cast metal brick on the back of the slightly stubbier transmission called the transfer case? You can spot it because you can clearly see an output pointing forward towards your front axle's differential. Matter of fact, can you still see any of the front axle parts remaining? you should see either a round flange with 4 bolt holes or even part of the bit that grips the universal joint connected to the 'pumpkin' in the middle of the front axle. Does your truck still have the transfer case shifter inside by the gear shift? If the last guy didnt tear too much off of your truck, you may well just want to re-install what you need to make it 4wd again!

I saw that happen once... an 80 or so Toyota pickup was cruising down the street, and somehow the rear gear spool locked up, and the torque from the engine broke the drive shaft clean off where it mounted to the rear 3rd member.

I hope this isn't what happened to you...then you need some new gears in that rear axle

LOL tofer, classic.....

yeah, if it's got a transfer case in it, it's a stock rear 4wd DS...

If not, it's IDK, a foot shorter... And a 2WD is a slip yoke. So that might be the pop out you're referring to...

And looky just what popped into my head! Not only is the 4WD truck higher, but I am sure it has more suspension travel. So all that together does mean the slip yoke will just slip right on out

Go back and slap the guy that did that to the truck silly...
