if i recall, it alters the shift points in your tranny so that they shift at higher RPMs, meaning youre in the power band of your gears for a little longer. that combined with a more lead foot will mean you get a little bit more power.
little fun fact, it stands for "electronic(ally) controlled transmission"

While we are on the subject-does it only come on certain models/tranmissions?

Not sure of exactly what it's doing in technical terms, but mine has it too and it tightens up your shift points. In other words, it extends the shift points of the transmission so that the engine winds out more between shifts, or in even simpler terms, it waits to shift at higher speeds than it does when the ECT is switched off. Sort of does what you would do when driving aggressively with a manual transmission.

Uh.... no. drguitarum2005 is correct. It just makes your tranny shift later so you'll have more pull while racing that Ferrari!

^ Ditto ^

And what's up with calling it the ECT button? The truck has an ECT. But the ECT PWR button puts the ECT into ECT PWR mode

completely different ECT. that stands for "engine coolant temperature" and is a way of tricking the computer into thinking the engine is cooler, delivering more fuel. that mod and the ECT mentioned in this thread are unrelated.

I realize this is a really old topic BUT... i also wonderd this and used the Search Button but if this is to help it shift in a higher RPM what is O/D For?? Doesnt O/D do that also? So if i used both the effect would be?

O/D is just an extra gear (your 4th gear on the common toyota auto) to lower rpms for high-speed cruisin like on the freeway. it has nothing to do with when your transmission shifts. ECT makes your transmission shift at higher RPMs, thereby letting your engine spend more time in the "performance band" of RPMs, giving you a little improved response and speed.

o/d is basically taking a gear away from your tranny, the ect just shifts at higher rpms to give u a better acceleration in all the gears

if youre going to be heavy on the accelerator i would use it, yes. it shouldnt raise gas mileage but i cant argue with the results that some people get so try it out on your own. O/D and ECT have nothing to do with each other. your 4runner has O/D ON normally meaning your transmission can shift into 4th gear. when you press the O/D button, you essentially lock out your 4th gear. ECT just changes the shift points. you can use neither, one, or both at the same time, it doesn't matter.
