Clicking noise in starter solenoid

My 87 truck has a 22r in it and the starter doesn't do anything but click when I turn the ignition. I'm thinking maybe the solenoid but I'm not sure. Tried beating the starter with a hammer. No results... Any suggestions I'd like to tear it apart and clean it if it's not the solenoid

Sometimes the clicking is a low battery. If you have a charger or can try and jump it give it a try. Just trying to eliminate the easy and cheap

Red face

It might be good to figure out just what is wrong before taking things apart.

The clicking of the starter solenoid can be from quite a few things.

battery at the end of it`s life.

Corroded or broken or loose battery terminals .

Poor ground connections

If you don`t own a multimeter now might be a good time.

I clean my Starter Relay Contacts.
Cleaned the Starter Relay Contacts. Bend these 6 tabs that hold the cover on.

Agree with checking battery level and all connections first.

Like Wyoming said ^^^.
Take few measurements first.
Low battery could energize the starter solenoid but may not actuate it enough to fully close the contacts, OR
Good battery will energize solenoid, actuate the plunger well, but bad contacts will not allow power to go to starter motor.

Solenoid stuck? Bent shaft or gunked up? Yeah, that could do it, too. How did you fix it?
