Best way to locate a replacement engine

Hey everyone, new to this forum. Used to have an '87 Toy running a 22RE with a whole host of changes (including bobbed bed) to long to list. But, sadly I sold her a couple years ago.

That being said, I've come across an opportunity to acquire a '93 4Runner 4x4 5spd with an engine that's going bad (crank is knocking). So I'll need to find a replacement V6 for her. Swapping it in myself isn't an issue, but I have no idea these days where to look for a new motor.

I'm located in Athens, GA, and can travel 150mi any direction to pickup a motor, or have one shipped to a friends shop. My budget for this is around $1100 for the new engine.

I've been dying for a chance to get back into a Toy, and this is a great chance for me to do it. I already know the first set of mod's I'll do, 3" lift, new driveshafts, extended breathers for the drivetrain, and later down the road some goodies from Marlin Crawler

Any thoughts, ideas, commentary?

EDIT: I've also considered the possibility of putting in a 3.9 Cummins Diesel (4cyl). Not sure if Advance Adapters or someone my have something to marry up that engine to the trans in the '93 4runner's, but its an option I'm open to considering.

IMHO - 3.4L swap or a diesel swap....

My guess is the 3.4L swap is more "proven" and easier to source parts for.

IMHO - if you have the expertise - you are better off rebuilding an existing motor using local trusted machine shops than buying a complete "rebuilt" motor... esp if you are on a budget.

Over here in the great state of Kentucky, we have a place located in Falmouth called www.orientengine.com.

From my understanding of the way these guys work (and I plan on using them if and when my 3vze ˟˟˟˟˟˟ the bed on me) is that they import lightly used engines from japan, etc. with 50-75,000 miles or so. Even with the low mileage, they completely rebuild them and put a 3 year warranty on it.

Not sure about shipping charges, but you can get a 3vze for around $2000 with core deposit, or a 5vzfe for a little under $3000 with core deposit. There are a whole list of engines there, I've heard nothing but good things about them.

A few months ago I got a 96 tacoma 4x4 with a blown 3.4, A friend of mine who has a auto repair shop told me to check www.car-part.com. I found a used motor with just over 100k on it for $800. It cost $150 to ship it. I put it in 3 weeks ago and it runs like a top.

If you are looking for a diesel. This is your best option.
www.jarcoinc.com

If you just want another 3.0, then www.car-part.com should have plenty.
