Just wondering what it would take to convert a 2007 tacoma Prerunner 4.0 Ext cab with the TRD package to a 4 wheel drive.

Transfer case, both driveshafts, front diff and CV shafts, front hubs and the ecus for the 4wd and maybe the ABS. And probably more money than it would be worth. Cheaper and easier to sell it and buy a 4wd one.

1. Sell 2wd
2. Buy 4wd

best thing you can do is throw a locker in the back... even then you wont perform like a 4wd can. shoulda bought a 4wd dude.

Yah ... what they said. You may love your truck now. But if you buy the same truck with the 4wd underpinnings, you'll still love it. Sell the WeeRunner and get a 4wd.

It can be done with a lot of labor and time and if you have the money.

And you may be able to do it fairly cheap if you can get what you need out of a wrecked truck.

The installation of the major components shouldn't be all that hard. After all, I think the front suspension is the same except for springs, since the fronts on the 4wd should have a higher rate (stiffer). The hubs and spindles should bolt right up. The transmission should be the same except for the transfer case adapter and mount.

While you are at it, you could go ahead and install a lift. New gears would be nice too, since you could do it while the front differential is out of the truck.

The problem would be knowing what's compatible with the electronics and electrical system. You would probably have to swap the wiring harness, and that would probably be a major task to do right. And by doing it right, that means not damaging the harness you need to install during the installation, and routing it the right way so it doesn't get damaged later on while driving. It would mean working in very tight areas and removing a bunch of components.

Then what would you do for a warranty?

And when you go to trade it, they will try to give you what the PreRunner is worth, not what a 4wd is worth. Maybe less, since the truck has been extensively modified.

After you add up the downtime and cost of alternate transportation, the cost of parts, the cost of any damage due to screw ups during installation, the major amount of time involved, it's just not worth it.

I would trade it on a 4wd that's got about the same miles or less as your truck. You can get a good extended warranty. And if you haggle enough, you may be able to get away with not paying much more than you are paying now.

And it would certainly save you major time, money, and headache.

2wd can go offroad. When I was a kid we took a full sized ford van hunting all the time and went down some pretty bad roads. I also saw a 2wd ford ranger at red lake in Sierra National Forest http://www.gentryoffroad.com/php/tra...hv/whokrz2008/ He had a modified clutch, rear locker and 33" mud tires (aired down). He said that he made it all the way to the lake without being pulled, which I find a little hard to believe.
My point is with good tires / slight mods a 2wd will go a lot of places if you know how to drive. I would also recommend taking recovery gear with you and know that 2wds have trouble going backwards uphill.

Personally a prerunner is a nice truck and I would keep it on the street.
When most people start driving off road they always want to push the vehicle just a little bit further all the time. I would recommend buying an older 4wd 22re toyota for cheap. That way when you beat it up you will not care nearly as much.
