I have a 2014 Tacoma 4x4 access cab with the stock steel 16x7 wheels. I'm looking at aftermarket alloy replacements. I want to keep the rig stock. I'm not going down the lift and oversized tires road. I intend to keep my same 245/75 R16 tire size (intend to run the OEM tires until they need replaced.) I do not want my wheel stance width to change substantially from stock. Basically, if I could find wheels that are exactly the same dimensions as stock that's what I'd prefer.

I've gotten confused by wheel offset and backspacing. I have had a hard time getting consistent information about what offset/backspacing my wheels have. Also not exactly clear about those terms' definitions. I assume offset means offset of the lugs relative to the rim inboard/outboard position. But I can't find any info about what backspacing means.

The wheels I see that look good tend to be at least 8 inches wide, an inch wider than the stock steel ones. So that means the offset needs to change in order to keep the inside of the rim/tire away from the brake caliper? A friend who has the same truck said that old school tire chains won't work on our trucks because the clearance with stock rims and tires is too tight.

Thanks in advance for any beta about this. I know I could go to the dealer and shop wheels with them, but that seems like the option that you'd use if you had a bunch of extra money you want to get rid of.
