Exclamation A/C Promblem

A good friend of mine has an '03 4Runner and he is having a promblem with his A/C. When he turns it on the light flashes(I guess he means the light on the button) and doesn't blow any cold air. Has anyone had this happen? What should we possibly look for or check? Could it show up something on a code reader? Any help will be greatly appreciated, he is trying to keep from going to the dealership.

Take it in to the dealership if it is still in warranty. I remember reading that a switch has bad contacts which causes this phenomenon. A certain batch of these switches goes bad and it'll need to be replaced..

It's not under warranty anymore. Could that show up on a code reader?

Check out this page: http://experts.about.com/q/Toyota-Re...ght-blinks.htm

Did a search for "toyota a/c blinks" in google. If it is in fact covered by a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) then you may get the repair for free or at a nominal cost. TSBs are repairs that Toyota will do if the problem is brought up, but is not treated like a Recall where they notify owners. They will only fix if your vehicle exhibits the problem.

Hope that helps...

I believe you should be able to take it into a Toyota dealership for a quick diagnostic check without incurring any charges. This way you will know what you are battling against and can decide at that point what you want to do. So with that in mind, just drop it off at the closest dealer (I'm not too fond of this either but it's one of those deals you just gotta) and have them inspect to see what the problem may be. If it is indeed a TSB then they will do the repair for you (even if it's out of the warranty I believe).

Good luck

I have an 84 Camry and it has done that a few times. I have no clue as to why, but the AC button will start blinking and it will not work. I assumed that it had something to do with the compressor, but was never sure. If I remember correctly, after turning off the engine and starting it back up, it would work.

Thanks everybody! I found 3 TSB's on the a/c system. One of them is for the relay which engages/disengages the magnetic clutches on the compressor and the sympton is a flashing a/c light and it will not work. The other 2 was for ice build up and for the blower fan not matching the speed that it's shown to be on. My buddy has made an appointment with his dealership Monday so we'll see how it goes.
