I guess I'm one of the "new" generation; that is a newb. with a 4th Gen. So, until I hear the call of the mod, I'm stock. I've cruised the forums for 6-9 months, and searched without much success on this topic, but now need to rely on you, the more experienced, to help me learn the capabilities of my stock XREAS suspension. Besides the published approach, breakover, and departure angles, what are the capabilities of the stock suspension without overstressing it? If I'm out on a backroad that is getting progressively more rough or rutted, what sizes of obstacles (rocks, ruts, logs, whatever) should I stay away from to keep from breaking my DD? For example, is crawling over 6" rocks okay, but over 12" rocks too much? I guess I'm looking for some guidelines on how to judge when to turn around, or take an easier line, and avoid making costly mistakes while I'm on this part of the learning curve. I do hope to wheel with others around here, and expect to learn a lot from that too. Thanks in advance for all your help and advice!

you're not likely to over-stress your suspension unless you are jumping your truck or something. And even then it can handle quite a bit. Wheeling on trails will not affect your suspension in a negative way.

Basically flexing your suspension out will not break anything.

The stock XREAS is pretty stout. I think bulldogyota has a video of him jumping off a sand dune! To be honest the suspension is not likely to break. If you are rock crawling or driving over large obstacles there are other things that are more likely to break than XREAS.

I'm still looking for more, even from those of you that have since lifted your 4th Gens, about what you could and couldn't do when they were still stock.

the biggest hindrance while stock was the ground clearance (well, lack thereof) ... the next issue was getting better tires.

other than that, it is pretty awesome, even stock!

couldn't do trails where i got stuck. basically started to tear up my body. at that point i knew i had to either start to stack rocks and figure out what to do next.

the only utlimate way to figure this one out is by trying as each individual's limit for damages (and the ones that sound bad) are different. Some go pretty far with no fear while others only make it to the entrance. Ya get what I mean?

I've seen people do some difficult trails stock and I was pretty impressed so it's all about driver skill. Remember that 90% is driver skill and only 10% is vehicle capability. If you can't drive your rig the right way, you're not gonna get far.
