2004 4Runner Purchase Pending/Questions
Hi All,
My wife and I are selling her Jeep Cherokee Sport (which has been good to us) and are looking at a 2004 V8 4Runner Ltd., all wheel drive, and I have a couple of questions. Reason: My 3rd gen. just doesn't have the gumption to pull our 4000# trailer, and her jeep overheats pulling our trailer out of our driveway (LOL). For the record, my 4runner pulled the trailer over HUGE mountain passes and the temperature gauge barely moved on a constant 18-20 mile long and very steep pass. It just sucks trying to merge pulling the trailer, not to mention going into a strong stiff wind. 1. After reading stuff on edmunds.com, there seems to be lots of individuals experiencing vibration problems with all models V8's and V6's. Any one here on Yotatech have this problem and is it a concern? 2. Do the Ltd. 4Runners with factory tow packages come with a tranny cooler? Thanks in advance, Cheers

No vibration problems with my 2004 V8 4x4 with 43,000 miles on it. I know the V8's came stock with a factory tranny cooler built into the rad, which is more than sufficient. As far as towing, you should have no problems with 4000+ lb loads, especially if you have a brake controller and electronic breaks on the trailer. Pretty sure the V8's also came with the tow package, which gives you the 7-pin harness, and the better hitch. Watch for caliper seizing, which is somewhat of a common problem with the 4Runners. You may also experience driveline clunking coming from the driveshafts when you stop and go, which is usually fixed by lubing the zerk fitting with good grease at regular intervals.

tempsho,
thanks for the reply. We ended up buying the 4runner for my wife. I called the dealership with the VIN# early yesterday and they told me it had a tranny cooler based on the VIN reading. I know I could have added an aftermarket tranny cooler, but we leave for a 4 week vacation in two days and I just didn't have the time to add one. I am stoked as I no longer have to pull our travel trailer with my 3rd gen runner which I use to off-road. Can hardly wait to pull our trailer to Oregon with our new(ish) V8. Should be much better. Thanks for the info about the driveline clunking; I'll definitely be greasing the drive shaft at regular intervals. Cheers
