2003 4runner V8 w/ 160K miles DEAL?

Thinking about buying a 03 4runner with 160k supposed freeway miles.

What kind of major service should this have gone through? I am not familiar with this V8, should it be bullet proof like most toyota engines? Or do you think it might be a POS like the old 3VZE?

He is asking $12.9k

Input please!

12.9....Sweet. Maybe try to chew him down. Looks like highway miles to me. It's pretty hard to put that much milage if it were not.

It's a steal!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You probably could do most of the regular maintenance yourself and save money.

Can't wait to have the chance to buy one maself. 3.OLD is POS indeed. I simply don't know what's all the hype about 3.SLOW

Yeah I have a 1st gen 3.slow as well but it hasnt be driven ever since i bought it. slowly putting it together, you know how that is. haha

only thing i am worried about is the major stuff that needs to be done at that kind of mileage (timing belt, valves, water pump, etc) and the resale potential of the truck when it hits 200K.

Well, I figure if one have worked on 3.OLD, one could work on anything.

That's why you should try to chew him down for so you can put some money aside for future maintenance (timing belt, valves, water pump, etc).

Timing belt, plugs and tranny fluid was due ~90K I think. Call your Toy dealer with the VIN and they may have the service history if it was done at any dealership nationwide.

if this checks out okay. im just wondering if this is a good deal. i would probably be selling it right when it hits 200k just because i get bored of cars easily.

i wonder how it would do resale wise....hmmmm....

M threezy,
I sent you PM on my 4 runner w/ 166k. One thing I forgot to mention is the Cat. Converters went out about 15,000 mi ago. pretty expensive to get replaced. I could not find anyone but Toyota that makes them, and they are very proud of them.
I am still not convinced it was not a O2 sensor, but I went 3 places and they all told me it had to be the cats..
Other than that, no problems.
Jeff

Wild, how much? Just curious, what were the symptoms of the cats going bad?

ETA: Its 120k for the plugs on the V8.

Not to get off topic,

When I had an 04 Tundra with the same 4.7 V8, both cats were replaced under warranty.
I asked the partsman how much they were, he said right around $1400.00 for the pair.

Something like $650.00 for one side, and $700.00 for the other side.

Tundra went bye bye after I saw that bill.

Ouch. It seems like the Cats is the money pit when hitting these high miles. There has to be an alternative to Toyota OEM cats....

There's plenty of aftermarket cats that can be welded in place and you'll probably spend less than $100 for each.

The Tundra was still under warranty, if I remember correctly around 9500 miles. Didn't cost me squat.
