03 4Runner Check engine light

Hello,

I've got a 2003 Toyota 4 Runner Sport V6 4WD. Recently my Check engine light came on. I borrowed a friends scanner. It read code P0136. The book says this is an o2 sensor. Bank 1 Sensor 2. I changed out the o2 Sensor on the driver side after the CAT. Now the dang light came on again with the same code. I've only got 44K miles on it.

Can anyone shed any light on this before I pull my hair out ?
thanks
rany

In my experience the P0136 for the second 02 sensor is often times a symptom of a slow switching 1st sensor. If it were me I would have someone plug it into to a machine that can watch the sensor switching and determine if there is really is an issue with #2 or if its just acting funky because of #1.

This might be totally wrong but I swear I remember there being a TSB for this. ECM recalibration maybe?

This might sound dumb, but did you clear the code after you replaced it, and then it came back on?

not dumb at all. I reset it both before AND after replacing the sensor. The light doesn't immediately light up. Takes 20-30 miles of driving.

My check engine light has come on a few times. I have gone to two different dealers. The problem with mine is the Cat Conv. One has gone bad. The second dealer even told me he checked the O2 sensors, and watched them toggel back and forth trying to adjust etc. I guess the cat is really bad. I am waiting to see if I pass the emission check here in Missouri. If I don't I guess I will have to replace it.
I have about 145,000 on my 03 w/ V6.
The last time it came on I just did the disconnect on the neg to the battery. It cleared the engine light. The frustrating part is the traction control goes off when the engine light is on. With the snow on the ground I like the traction control.
Good luck..

Hey I'm a sales rep. 50,000 a year is no big deal.
Plus I hunt every weekend during Nov, Dec, & Jan pulling my bird dogs around in a trailer.
I'll have 200,000 plus in another 12 mos.
I put 10,000 miles on my Honda VTX 1800 motorcycle this last year also.

I've got two kids in college and another starts next year. I better be working..
Oh yeh, my check engine light came back on last week. Better do the disconnect on the battery neg.. to clear it.

there is a TSB on the O2 sensor, I had mine replaced by the dealer-no charge.
as soon as I left and got on the road the light came back on. turns out there was some kind of sensor that needed to be recalibrated.

I had a dealer hook it up and the tech is the one that found the TSB. Sorry.
