Yet another 3.0 header install question

So I started to put the cylinder heads back on my truck but ran into a snag with my game plan.

I had planned to place the headers in the engine bay prior to placing the cylinder heads on. The idea was to slide the exhaust studs into the header as I dropped it into place. Maybe I'm not coordinated enough, but I had a hard time making that happen. I don't think I can install the headers after the heads are on, but I could be wrong.

Any one install headers with the engine in place (and whole)? I read a few threads on the subject with mixed info. I hope I haven't damaged the gasket in the process. I'll try again tomorrow when it isnt as cold.

Any insight?

Thanks!
Patrick

I'll check out the thread, but i'm thinking about abandoning the headers and stick with the stock system, crossover and all. I've struggled the past two days trying to make it work and it looks like the passenger side header hits the front bracket for the torsion spring. I can't get them to mate to the head. My goal was to improve the trucks longevity and serviceability, but I think the effort to install the headers won't payoff in the end. I've read where others who installed headers later regretted it or wouldn't do it again given the chance. Ive had enough fights with this truck and need something to go smoothly. If they can be installed later, than I can give it a go after I get her up and running.

Pros and cons of 3.0 headers

Sorry to ask another dumb question about headers, but as I mentioned in my other thread, I'm thinking about abandoning the headers and sticking with the OE setup. I haven't had much luck getting the headers to play nice. I'm not trying to build a faster, more powerful engine, just wanted to extend the life of the head and head gaskets.

I read where others who have installed the headers say it isn't with the effort. I'mhoping to get some
words of encouragement to either keep working to install the headers or go back to the stock set up.

Any thoughts?

well...with my son's 4runner, there is no noticeable "growl" or anything. as far as a power gain...no clue. could not really drive it before the build ( had only put 10 miles on it in 2 years of owning it before the rebuild).....but it's a good strong motor from what i can tell.

the placement of the headers was not hard.....tedious, but not hard. again, these are headers we paid $600 for, so I expect them to fit. as far as the piping and such, that was a PITA and required some skilled help from a fellow member XXXTREME22R to make sure the cuts we made were right since we only get 1 chance. plumbing the other stuff to the passenger's header was confusing and tedious again, but do-able.
