Wont Stay in 4 Wheel Drive

Hey i just made a trip up to the snow a couple of days ago and noticed my 91 toyota pickup, with 22re wont stay in 4 wheel drive, when i put it from 2H to 4H it just keeps falling back down into 2H, or if i move the shifter over a bit as to shift it into 4L or N it falls down to N, if i put it into 4L it seems to stay there better but still tries to fall back up to N, is my tranny just shot or anyone else have this as a common problem? i did lift my truck and have the shifters extended but we did a really good job on the welding and i'm positive that the shifter is ligned up the propper way. not too sure if its back installed coreectly or what i figure checking that out is worth a shot, i have used it in 4x4 since the lift with no problems so i'm not too sure whats causing the tension to pull it back to the 2H and N positions.

Probably worn shift forks or detent springs in the transfer case. They can be changed at home and would be available at Marlin Crawlers. If It were mine, I'd pull the transfer off open it up and take a look at the shift forks, and clutch sleeves. The transfer is a fairly simple system and definitely fixable. Good luck.

okay i've been doing a bit of research and i wanted to let it be known that i do not have the ADD (or so i assume) as i have to manually get out and lock in my hubs if i want to use 4wd, also i do have a lift and i'm almost positive we welded the angle correctly on the shifter and added the correct 3 inches as thats what my lift was so i'm not sure i may have this off a bit and will check it out to see if its just the shifter itself not going all the way into 4wd but i can shift all the way through 2H into 4H, into N, into 4L, and back and it engages in all four positions, it's just that whilst in 4H mainly, it tries to jump back down to 2H, but if i pull it over as if i'm trying to put it into 4L it then will jump down to N, if i pop it into 4L it seems to stay pretty good in 4L, but it occasionally pops up into N, now if i sit there and hold it into position, it stays in whether it be 4H or 4L. It just seems theres tension thats not letting it stay in either position, mainly 4H, do you think its because of my body lift maybe the shifter wasn't installed properly or the lenght is not right. beucase i never noticed this problem until now really, although i did go wheeling once since the lift with no problems that was 4L which 4L doesn't seem to really pop out it only has one time so far 4H is my main problem

If you are sure there isn't any tension on the shift lever from the lift (like a boot or piece of the body pushing on the lever) then it is probably internal. The FSM shows that you would need to remove the transmission and transfer to be able to disassemble and inspect. There are specs for all the components that can usually be checked with a feeler gauge or a caliper. Other than breakage, you probably can't tell visually if the components are worn excessively. Get the FSM here if you don't already have it: http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/index.html
