Winding noise in transmission.
My 88 Toyota pick up (3L V6 4x4) starting making a strange winding noise when I Push the clutch petal in, would a Clutch pilot bearing be whats causing this? what about a Clutch Release Bearing? Thoughts?

Release Bearing
Release bearing is my guess. I just had my transmission replaced and had this addressed as well.
When you push the clutch pedal, the slave cylinder pushes a fork that presses on the release bearing to pull the clutch plates apart. (very basic description) When you release the pedal, the noise goes away, right?

Ya it goes away once I've released the clutch. I have a funny feeling i might just get all the bearings in that area and replace them all at once. No harm in a bunch of new parts, especially since they don't cost that much. I just don't know that much about transmissions soo I figured I'd ask on here.

Sounds like a release bearing. If you're not sure... keep driving it. I drove mine for about 3 months from first whine to when the SCREEECHING got really bad. Then I did a clutch job. It's not a rush job, the bearing takes a long time to fail, and you'll feel it get worse in the pedal before it goes.

Ya I talked it over with one of my buddy's, we are pretty sure its the Release Bearing, I figured I might as well do pilot bearing while I'm in there, then at work today I was thinking I might as well put a new clutch in while I'm at it so its funny you said that as one of the first things I read when I got home, shes got 208 000 miles so it would probably be worth it, this might just turn into a bigger project then I intended.

Update, Went though the Trucks maintenance history, a clutch was put in 2000 miles ago with no mention of a throw out bearing or pilot. why they didn't do the release and pilot bearing when they were in there is a mystery to me, but I'm not complaining because a new clutch was going to cost me around 270 bones.

Seriously, who replaces a clutch and pressure plate and doesn't do the bearings at the same time?! Silly silly, in most cases.
Still, good news on having a newer clutch in there. Good luck with the bearing replacement!
