Will a bad tranny cause your speedo to be off?

Will a bad tranny cause your speedo to be off?

I have an 88 4runner 3.0 5speed and my first and fourth gears are impossible to get into so I start in second and then jump from 3rd to 5th. While taking off I go from 0-60 in 2.5 seconds and then back to 40 then 110 and then somewhere about 35 I think it settles down. Is this because of my transmission or do i need a new speedo cable?

It sounds like something in the transmission is slipping causing the speedometer to take off, then when it re-engauges the speedometer goes back to normal speed.

I would bet on the speedo cable being bad.
