why wont my 22re comme out! GRRRRR
hello, baught my self an old beater toyota with a blown 22re a couple weeks ago (92 4x4 toyota truck). I had a good running 22re at home from and old 4runner i used to have and wanted to put it in this. I started yesterday got all the wiring off and did the rest toniight, powersteering hoses, starter, radiator, housing bolts (and yess the one behind the slave cylinder lol). I got the engine seperated about 2-3" and i can move it around real real good every direction excpet forward but i still cant seem to get it to completely seperate from the transmission, any ideas?
Really fustrating this is not my first 22re removal

i double checked and triple checked everything the only thing holding it back is something inside the transmission. Only possible problem i could see is the small Pilot bearing i believe its called, thats inside the crank is seized onto the transmission shaft and is not letting it go any further than to where the clutch sits. Any ideas?

Just wiggle away. When I pulled my pooped motor out, it did the same thing. I think the old man levered a 2x4 in there at one point somewhere. That bearing was a bear to get out of the flywheel, too, had to cut it up to remove it.

Pry bar, a big one. If it's that far out and you're not simply snagging an engine mount on the frame somewhere, the only thing holding the two together is the splines into the clutch disk.

Now Trike, you just made me think. What if... the pilot bearing came free of the flywheel, but stuck to the input shaft end, then hung up on the clutch? Possible at all? If so, would taking the clutch off the flywheel free the engine?

That's entirely possible, it's been quite a while since I've had the transmission out of a Toyota, if the pilot bearing is bigger than the minor diameter of the splined part of the input shaft, it could do that. Worth a shot and at least may give a better look at what's goin on in there.

Never had one to stick like you are talking about but sounds fairly common now.

thats what i was trying to say earlier, i will have to check if their is enough room, if the clutch is off it should definitely come, i will try pulling it with an atv tonight, if it dont work well then will see about the clutch, and if that don't work well i guess im gonna have to take the tranny out

Controlled force was really the key for me.
I was towing a '85 4runner with a 22re pick up, both entirely loaded down from Washington State to Maine and lost a tranny in Chicago.
Had to do it on the street, I had the same hangup and I ended up using a come-a-long off of the rear axle...and lots o' wigglin'...
Good luck!

Well it didn't go so well againe tonight, tried a come alone, a atv, different prying methods still didn't move ...
I ended up saying f-it and take out the transmission with the engine and oh what fun, broke 4 bolts that mate the tranny to the transfer-case and also wasn't able to brake those apart, i ended up doing what i thought was impossible and take engine-transmission-transfercase all out it one bundle!!!
Now its all on the ground and i am still scrathing my head on figuring out how i am going to seperate the transmssion from transfercase, i am not even gonna bother with the transmission and engine right now, i have a spare transmission that i also had left over and will be using that one if i am lucky enough to have them have both the same output shaft splines
