Why is my 3VZE idle speed so high?

Not to long ago I rebuilt my V6 engine in my 1992 4Runner. It had a bad piston. Everything after that worked fine until a few weeks ago, my check engine light came on. I then brought it to the mechanic and he told me i needed to replace my injectors, so i replaced them the other day. When i went to start my engine, the idle speed was around 1500 rpm's. I checked all vacuum lines and adjusted the idle speed screw. That brought the rpm's down to 1000. Could it be my air intake sensor that is out or is there something else that could be wrong causing me rpm's to run high?

timing also affects idle speed

Zero?! That ain't right. Should be 10*btdc with the diagnostic terminals TE1 and E1 jumped.

even when the terminals aren't jumped it shouldn't be at zero- more like 15-20. but being at zero should be causing a lower idle.

have you tried using a spray to check for vacuum leaks? carb or fuel injector cleaner with the straw, sprayed intermittently along hoses and gasket seams can help locate vac leaks. the engine speed will change when the cleaner is sucked through a leak.

another thing to check is that the throttle is closing completely.

If adjustng the idle screw brought it down to the proper rpm, maybe the old injectors were really that bad?

Good point, Cyber. The question is where is the idle screw sitting at now? How far was it necessary to adjust it inward to bring the idle down? If it's way far in, something else is amiss.

ok, ill try the spray for vacuum leaks abecedarian, and my idle screw is pretty far in there, but i adjusted my timing and messed with the idle screw and the rpm's finally went down but my check engine light still will not go off so i think its something to do with the vacuum system.

i dont have a code reader so i dont know what to start looking for and i really would rather not bring it to the mechanic cause he charges $70 just to hook the code reader up

ok so i post the last message before i read the link you sent me, my mistake, so the check engine flashed 5 times then paused and flashed 2 more time which would be code # 52 right? and that would be my knock sensor?

yes, it has a good connection, but the wiring in my 4runner has never been replaced so it could be just the wiring or the knock sensor itself, is there a way to test the knock sensor? like a resistance test?

Doesn't look like it. Just testing for short or open in the circuit.
