why is my 22re so loud?
I have a 86 pickup 4wd with a 22re. When i bought the truck it had 264,000 miles on it, but the engine was supposed to be rebuilt, at idle the fan seems to be really loud and so does the engine, the engine has a nosie as if some bearings are loose, im not really sure. any help to cure this problem?

Your fan clutch is NG. The fan should be turning slow. At first start up it will pump air for about 30 sec then the clutch should let go. The other rattle could be lots of things. Most likely timing chain tensioner problem.

Mines just naturally loud. The top end clicking "diesel noise" is the valve lash. I've done the valves a number of times, and it does get a little better when they're adjusted right. I also replaced the adjuster studs, and they were worn, and its quieter now, but still noisy, especially compared to cars that are build today

I agree that likely the fan clutch is not operating properly.
also on a high mileage engine, it's possible that the rocker arm shafts are worn and no amount of adjusting the valves is going to make it go away.
