White Smoke but no milkshake????

I recently switched out the intake manifold gasket on my 22r and the truck was running great. On the way home from work (which involves one good hill climb) my truck started to ideal funny at a light and the temp started climbing. I noticed a bunch of white smoke coming from the exhaust as I left the light!!! I pulled it over and shut it down ASAP. I checked the oil and there was no milkshake (coolant and oil mixture) to be found on the dipstick, so I started back up and limped the last 1/4 mile to my house. Again I checked the oil, and still no shake to be had. I am leaning towards the intake gasket leaking into the number 1 or 2 intake passages, but I am not sure. Truck still idled and once the majority of the water blew/burned out of the cylinder(s) it ran as normal. Is it possible to blow a headgasket on a 22r without getting oil/water mixing? Please help me out with any thoughts or ideas before I tear into this thing.

A little about the truck:
87 4x4, Carb (not efi)
-recently installed fresh '81 block and head, 22r (has a custom crower cam, bored .03 and completely rebuilt by a pro to a long block)
-has '87 intake and exhaust manifolds bolted to the '81 head for smog reasons (California smog)
-new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil, oil filter, coolant, air filter, and fuel filter at time of swap (about 2 weeks ago)

Sure, coolant could be passing from a coolant passage to a cylinder while all the gasket surrounding the oil passages remains in tact.

My truck was just pouring coolant straight into the cylinders with perfectly clean oil... my problem was the head gaskets...

So... Yeah... It was the head gasket. The shop that rebuilt the motor for the PO used an el-cheapo head gasket and it failed between a coolant passage and the number 4 cylinder. Swapped it out using a handy FAQ on the forum for a couple of tips and VIOLA!!!! It runs. Still dodgy on the vacuum lines, but I am going to be going to a weber set-up or (if I can find time/money) fuel injection. Thanks for the tips.
